The question in JWLibrary asks "Have you already attended this year's convention?" 

It doesn't say anything about your scheduled convention, so I think you are correct. However, it is pretty clear that the brothers would like you to have attended a convention before accessing the release.

I can give you an estimate...
(All that involved are sworn to secrecy)
If they are filming 'The Sermon on the Mount', this would be Ep 4 or Ep5. I have seen the director for Ep 6 doing the rounds, so the advance planning is already well along, maybe even including Ep7.
As for the actual shooting, 3 and possibly 4 are 'done'. However, the post-production work and translation take quite a bit of time, especially to get the mouth and words all matched in all the languages.
To get all the episodes done in the 7.5 years - that would equate to 2 full episodes per year. As it appears at the current RC, each Ep is released in 2 parts. This roughly matches what I have outlined above.
I hope this helps you get a 'feel' for what is going on... it is so exciting down here.

We just finished our second day today. The first episode is epic!

During the subsequent talks we were able to see a few seconds of episode 2 (that’s my guess).

My question is: are there going to be 16 or 18 episodes in total? I can’t track down which number is official and which one is a rumor

In 3 weeks we will have our RC, each assembly is super exciting, but this one is special because it focuses on the main good news of God: His only begotten son, Michael (in heaven) (Jesus on earth) Abadon (in apocalypse) lol. Our great king Jehovah will receive glory and we will get to know him better, by seeing and knowing even better our king Jesus Christ, the living image of our heavenly father. My children are eager to be at the assembly and be able to enjoy the first episode of this great series.

I went to the Australasia Branch for a visit last week. We did the tour of the 'front' half. Then we had lunch and did a walk around the 'backlot'.
I went to see the 'studio' where the big monster screen is. It is impressive. The Society currently has 3 of these screens. It was impressive. It has more of a curve on it than I imagined. And it's 6 meters tall.
We were able to view these areas, as there was no filming being done at the Branch. They are 'on location ' shooting the 'Sermon on the Mount.'
I am looking forward to seeing episode 1 this month!

At the end of the Convention this year there is a video preview of both Episode 2 and 3 - and afterwards it is announced that they will be presented at the Conventions next year.
