Sorry to say I can't help out with the topic that was in. However, I was calculating...

It would come out to about 385 soldiers per minute. (That's not what you were asking for, is it?)

A local elder did a talk a few years ago, and made reference to Hezekiah's angel and the 185,000 dead soldiers. The angel killed them all off in one "night", or, let's say... eight hours. The brother had asked for the help of another brother in the congregation who was a math teacher for many years. Together, they calculated how long it would take for all of Jehovah's angels to destroy the world's wicked people at Armageddon, assuming there were 100 million angels (ten thousand times ten thousand), and a world population of about 8 billion. They calculated that it would take a mere 11 seconds!

This might work. Thanks.

It interesting to compare what we think might have happened to the 185,000 to what might happen today but that limits Jehovah's power to what we assume happened then. There is no way that what happened to the 185,000 can give us any information about what might happen today. We do know that Jehovah has the power to accomplish what he says will happen.

If 385 per minute, then it would be around 6 per second. That if happens in 8 hours, but it would double in 4 hours, right?

Um... No. In four hours it would be roughly half as many... about 193 or so.

Why are we trying to figure out how many bad guys the angels can do away with?

EDIT: Okay, I see what you're looking at (now that I take a second peek). Okay, if it's only a four-hour "night", yeah. It would be double. On the other hand, one "night" in Israel could have been only six hours. In that case, it would be about 514 per minute.

It basically comes down to what "in one night" encompasses. I live in Florida - hurricane country - and many times it seems like a hurricane comes ashore at night. It may only take an hour or two for the storm to go from a hurricane to a tropical storm, leaving a path of destruction in its path. Later, some may say, "The amount of destruction done overnight was staggering" when the actual destruction was done in 45 minutes.

The same happens when tornados hit during the night. The news will report on the destruction done "overnight" or "last night" when the actual destruction only took minutes.

We do not know how fast those soldiers died - it could have taken second, minutes or hours ... how long it took is not the point of that account - Jehovah's saving of His people was more important than how fast an angel was moving.

On a side note - if you really want to calculate something - calculate how many people may have been "outside the camp" using a "peg" at any given minute of the day/night when the Israelites were in the wilderness ... since there may have been more than 3,000,000 people

We do not know how long it took the angel killed the soldiers. Here is my calculations regarding those dying  per second. Any thoughts?

1. In 8 hrs, around 6 died per second.

2. In 4 hrs, around 12 died per second.

3. In 2 hrs, around 25 died per second.
4. In 1 hr, around 50 died per second.

5. Half hr, around 100 died per second.

Personally, I think it would have been very quick, as any disturbance by other soldiers moaning of being killed may have awaken those around them. So even if you put it say at 6 minutes for the entire period, there would have been 514 soldiers per second killed by that angel.

Looking at even the carnage that has happened in human warfare, the amount of 185,000 killed in one night is still much greater than that killed in one day of battle between two opponents. Here are a few examples:

Cannae - 216 BC - 90,000 Romans and the allies lost their lives in one day of fight trying to defeat the Carthaginian General Hannibal. The Romans lost about 20% of their entire Roman army of that time period!

Borodino - 1,812 AD - Napoleon invading Russia ,where 40,000 French men were killed and wounded which many succumbed to their wounds or froze to death, whereas the Russians lost 45,000 men.

Waterloo - 1,815 AD - Napoleon is at it again, losing 25,000 Frenchmen, whereas the British losing 15,000 men with another 7,000 Prussian allies.

The Somme - 1st July 1916 - Even though nearly a million men were killed, wounded or missing in the period up to mid-November that year, in the first few hours since dawn of that battle, some 20,000 British soldiers lost their lives.

Then even looking at the use of atomic bombs, Nagasaki had only 64,000 casualties (39,000 deaths) and Hiroshima suffered worse still with 135,000 casualties (66,000 dead).

So what do we have to fear? Even mortal man cannot match the speed and accuracy of just one angel.

I imagine the angel gave them all cardiac arrest at once. Instant death, no fuss, no muss.

It is interesting that there wasn't any blood or flesh wounds on the Assyrians that were killed.

It will be possible for the angel not to be hindered in carrying out this mission with any obstacles such as tents, armor or protective clothing, as the angel is a spirit creature and it is not hindered by the physical barriers that man has to deal with.

It would have been interesting on performing an autopsy to see what their actual case of death is. Was it to the heart with internal injuries, or to the brain where there was  chemical reaction, or was it something that may not be detectable at all?

Either way, if an Assyrian did happen to see an angel before them as if they were awake, I would not only say that their heart would be missing a few beats, but also their underwear would have been soiled badly too.

But even looking at the video, the angel would have been moving at such a speed that you may not even see it.

Perhaps he killed all of them instantaneously. We don't know. Jehovah didn't record that detail for us, perhaps Jehovah didn't want us to speculate about the future.

And if the angel did it in 3 minutes, it would be around 1,000 per second.

On 6 November, 2022, Brother M. Stephen Lett visited the Korea Branch for a shepherding visit. In his talk entitled “Can You Profit from Jonah’s Experience?” Brother Lett mentioned an interesting point regarding this topic. Since it’s related with this discussion I wanted to share it:

“There’s always more with us than against us. In fact, if Jehovah had dispatched one angel with Jonah, he’d have more with him than against him. One angel killed 185,000 [in] one night. And we don’t even know if the angel worked all night. He might have [gone] home earlier that evening. But within a night. 185,000 killed. Too bad Jonah didn’t think thoughts like in Hebrews 13:6.”—1:49:27.

Had quite a problem finding this post again because of very descriptive post title.

That's interesting that you mention it because when the brother said that, I was immediately reminded of this topic that I saw on this forum and I thought "That's so strange he said exactly that as if he read that post too." It's just a while ago we had a topic for "a wishlist in JW Library" which added a functionality exactly mentioned in that post. Well who knows.

Several years ago i made a comment here about not needing the Bible after Armageddon, a couple of weeks later there was a Morning Worship posted on jw.org where Bro Lett specifically says we will use the Bible. They corrected me very quickly 🤣

I do recall that many years ago we used to use the expression that the angel killed the 185,000 in one night "by the edge of the sword" - we no longer use that expression and the video we had that included this account showed something that may have only taken seconds to occur

Guess if we really want to know just how long it actually took - we will have to make sure we get into the NS so we can ask an eyewitness to the event
