Earthquakes In One Place After Another...

The USGS knocked the quake's magnitude DOWN quite a bit and lifted the quake's depth UP nearly fifty miles.

 

New Zealand's  GEONET seismic center's instruments can't be THAT far off.  If their instruments are that inaccurate, that would mean they are also unreliable.  And millions of New Zealanders are relying on them.

According to the info on site linked above, 41 stations reported a magnitude of 7.3 for the New Zealand quake.

 

0 stations reported a 6.9 magnitude.

 

Yet 6.9 was assigned as the USGS's 'reviewed' magnitude?

Brother Tracey, have you ever come across anything from the USGS  that explains how the USGS assigns magnitudes to quakes?

 

I like Michael Janitch's method:. throw out the highest and the lowest reported magnitudes and go with the magnitude in the middle.

Well, today may have started out in the 4.0+ range, but it quickly shifted into the 5.0+ and 6.0+ range.

 

These are just a few of the reports that have come in via my phone's earthquake app in the past hour or so.

 

There has been 12 big quakes so far.

One 7.0+, two 6.0+ and nine in the 5.0+ range.

 

The number of 4.0+ quakes for today is now up to eighty-eight.

How are earthquakes recorded? How are earthquakes measured? How is the magnitude of an earthquake determined?

Earthquakes are recorded by a seismographic network. Each seismic station in the network measures the movement of the ground at that site. The slip of one block of rock over another in an earthquake releases energy that makes the ground vibrate. That vibration pushes the adjoining piece of ground and causes it to vibrate, and thus the energy travels out from the earthquake hypocenter in a wave.

There are many different ways to measure different aspects of an earthquake:

Magnitude is the most common measure of an earthquake's size. It is a measure of the size of the earthquake source and is the same number no matter where you are or what the shaking feels like. The Richter scale is an outdated method for measuring magnitude that is no longer used by the USGS for large, teleseismic earthquakes. The Richter scale measures the largest wiggle (amplitude) on the recording, but other magnitude scales measure different parts of the earthquake. The USGS currently reports earthquake magnitudes using the Moment Magnitude scale, though many other magnitudes are calculated for research and comparison purposes.

Intensity is a measure of the shaking and damage caused by the earthquake; this value changes from location to location.

Update from USGS:

M 7.4 - Kermadec Islands, New Zealand
2021-03-04 17:41:25 (UTC)29.613°S 177.843°W55.6 km depth

The M7.4 much farther north along the Kermadec Trench has a focal mechanism and origin depth consistent with slip along the subduction interface between the Pacific and Australia Plates. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ev…

You may be asking, “are these related?” Well, stress changes from earthquakes typically extend only up to about 3 rupture-lengths away, and these earthquakes are more like 10 rupture lengths apart! They’re unlikely to be related—large earthquakes in this region are common.

Two large earthquakes have occurred beneath the southwest Pacific today. The earlier M7.3 was strongly felt across much of New Zealand. The more recent M7.4 occurred ~4 hr later, ~900 km away. Given the large distance between them, the events are probably not directly related.

So, suddenly, the USGS admits their quake magnitudes are just a bunch of huey?

 

And New Zealand's GEONET magnitudes were totally accurate?

 

The 'spin' just makes your head spin. 😳

Just an update on New Zealand earthquakes.

At 2.27 this the first of three current large earthquakes happened.

It was 7.1 around the white island vacinity

Then at 7.45 ish we were on field service and a 7.4 happened at kermadecs just above NZ

Then at 8.30 we have had a 8.0

There is a tsunami warning for north and east of the north island.

The rest of NZ is currently being assessed.

No reported damage as they were offshore.

The Tsunami warning remain our greatest risk at the moment.

 

Bizarrely genet is not reporting the last two but TV new zealand and stuff media is.

Yup!  And it just happened to pop up off the north coast of New Zealand's North Island.

This is why so-called "experts" in science, medicine, law etc. are not taken seriously by a large number of people.

In just about any and every field of study, there seems to be an underlying agenda.

We are ok in Whanganui  but northland is in chaos people with picnic baskets and going down to the beach how stupid.

Earthquakes aren’t real. They really don’t happen, its just another fake media hype....we don’t need to listen to warnings. Theres not going to be any tsunami. They’re just trying to scare people as usual. 🙄

Wow

Hopefully that's the end of it for us. The worst of the tsunami has passed .. it equated to very high tidal surges and high tides for us thankfully. I think we are just far enough south  to escape the worst of things.

Normally I take the dog for a walk on the beach in the afternoon.  Today with a combination of high tide and surge warnings did a street walk instead

I have my phone's earthquake app set so that it only notifies me about quakes that register 5.0 and above.

 

I woke up and found 49 notifications had been sent while I slept.

These five + 44 more.

 

The majority are aftershocks from those 3 ginormous quakes that struck yesterday, north of New Zealand.

 

 

There have been so many aftershocks, they all overlap and become these big red blobs.
