Tapatalk is dying, and will most likely be removed

Recommended Posts

Our software, called Invision, is ever moving forward, and just had a major release that we haven't installed yet. It's chock full of new features and design changes. However, one of the problems with upgrading is that some 3rd party applications may not have been updated to be compatible with the latest software release.

One 3rd party app that we use is Tapatalk. However, if you look at the Tapatalk Support Forums, they look pretty dead. Low activity, and very little response. Here is a post I made on February 19th that nobody has bothered to answer as of yet...

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/tapatalksupport/any-plans-to-bring-tapatalk-to-invision-community--t48151.html#p260559

Scrolling around over there reveals some interesting drama over the last few years that I was unaware of. It appears that Tapatalk sold themselves to another company. That company didn't do jack-diddly with the product and ran it into the ground. Then the original authors bought it back. But then, a company that owned like 1500+ forums stopped using Tapatalk in favor of their own in-house app, seriously hitting them financially.

Now the place looks like a ghosttown.

We will eventually have to make the decision to move forward with our upgrade. It isn't imperative at the moment. But we can't stay on old software and deprive ourselves of security patches, bug fixes, and advancing features because Tapatalk is going belly up.

If I understood what all this meant I would answer with joy, Brother Robert. But there you go, total lack of digital culture on my side. Really sorry about that.🥺

To paraphrase a song;

Then, forward, you Moderators, ever strong of heart!
Rejoice that in this work you too may have a part!
Go tell far and wide the new version is near,
That e’er long its rich blessings will be here!

Fa, there was a time when mobile browsers were quite limited and were not a good tool to view forums and participate in them. So there were several apps that did that and did it much better. Tapatalk was one of them, and many used it to visit JWTalk.

With time, however, browsers have improved a lot and apps like Tapatalk have become obsolete. Only a handful of members use it anymore. So the next upgrade to the forum software will no longer support it. All members will have to access by means of a browser.

Thank you very much, brother Carlos, it is very kind of you to explain. Now I understand better 😊

I am looking forward for the new update! I’ve been longing for that dark mode.

Also the Tapatalk, I’ve never heard to this app before until I joined JWTalk and until today I still use the website because I just found it more convenient all without the need to install an app.

Since I mostly access the forum on my PC ... I'm fine without tapatalk. Even when I do use my phone, I just use the browser, and it works fine.

Go for the upgrade/update Bob ...

looking forward to what new things we will be able to complain about once the changes are made

we seem to have run out of complaints for the current version

For those that are gearing up sending complaints. 😂😂

Please watch this video of what the new Invision Community layout is going to look like.

Also @Brother_Bliss, have we ever used this "Live Topic" feature before?

https://invisioncommunity.com/news/invision-community/invision-community-5-live-topic-improvements-r1297/

I was just wondering if we are because that Live Topic feature might be perfect during annual meeting, except no live video. 😁

No. That's only available on certain Cloud plans. JWTalk is actually hosted on a server owned by a brother, with a self-hosted "Community Classic" license.

If we hosted on one of Invision's Cloud plans, the expenses would be considerably more exorbitant.

Oh, I see. Yeah, I looked on the pricing and the prices are not annually but monthly for the cloud. 😬😬😬 Expensive.

But the self-hosted is much cheaper. https://invisioncommunity.com/buy/self-hosted/

I mean, it's not of a big deal anyway because we still have our topics which is enough. I just had to ask if we have that. 😁😁

Ty for all your 'behind the scenes' work to keep this forum working.
I use Tapatalk, but I can live without it. It was good while it lasted, but in this tech work, I learnt you must always keep up to-date, otherwise you end up like the Dodo.
RIP Tapatalk...

I actually didn't know how to interact with this forum. I stumbled across both this forum and Tapatalk at the same time. I liked the user-friendly aspect of Tapatalk on my Android phone.
I didn't know they existed apart from each other. Lil
I rarely use my PC, which has a fancy extension. However, I have worked out how to drive this site from my browser, so I will still enjoy reading and chatting with you all.
Just please give me a "heads-up" when I should uninstall Tapatalk.
Thanks again Rob!
