What do you do for a living?

Recommended Posts

I have had many different jobs over the years and I'm only 35.

Boiler operator, ceremonial guardsman, and oil lab technician in the Navy. After I got out of the Navy, I was a plumber's apprentice; customer service rep for a pneumatics manufacturer; assembler, foreman, field service engineer, production manager, inside sales for a hydraulic systems manufacturer; application engineer, aftermarket inside sales, field service engineer, and now a senior proposal specialist for a gearbox manufacturer.

Although I enjoy my job, I would much rather be in Jehovah's service. I was just baptised last March, but I would love to find the time to at least auxilliary pioneer.

Welcome Todd, looks like you'll have lots of experience for repairs and such in the New World.

Yes, welcome, Todd. I am a retired nurse - I work every other weekend to help with gas money to Auxillary Pioneer. My employer also allows me to leave for the meeting on Sunday morning then I return to the Nursing Home. Our rural area has always been economically depressed - today the employers are the casinos and federal/state prisons. Our congregation has always had 55-65 publishers - we just drive an hour to work. My heart goes out to the brothers who work to 5 pm, go home to eat and get dressed for our 7 pm meeting on Tuesday night and drive the 20/30 minutes to get to the Kingdom Hall. I did it for many years - I stayed in town, took an "Old Maids" bath, changed clothes for the meeting and stayed. I knew if I drove the 20/30 minutes home to get dressed I would not get back into town and miss the meeting. When we put forth the effort Jehovah certainly will us!

Deborah, I sure know what that's like! I'm on a break from school, and I'm working two jobs right now. I keep a skirt in my work locker LOL! I work for the government, and for a walmart photolab, the government position never interferes with my meetings, but the photolab allows me thursday nights and modified work hours on Sunday so I can attend the meetings.

I've also had no problem getting time off for special assemblies, or for the district conventions. Even better, many of my co-workers have questions they've asked of our religion, or points they needed clarification on which they wouldn't bother to ask at the doors. One of my co-workers has also worked with a witness before and she said she liked her immensely and had a lot of respect for her.

Work can be such a target rich environment for witnessing if you're as fortunate as I am!

When I got real sick and I was having problems getting my time in I ask the c.o. if I should quit and this was his answer, Never quit pioneering let Jehovah lay you off, then you still have all the benefits.

I wish I understood what this means. Let the elders tell you - you have to get off the list?

Plan ahead as if Armageddon will not come in your lifetime, but lead your life as if it will come tomorrow (w 2004 Dec. 1 page 29)

I think the emphasis is on "Never quit", as in, don't give up - abandon that mentality.

Granted, if things persisted or got worse, then it might have been time for a "lay off", which would hopefully only be a temporary hiatus.

I see this is an old thread, but anyways, for the past 11 years I have worked as a trademark's law clerk at a large law firm. Before that I worked for a financial institution for about 15 years, as an administrative assistant for three years, and waitressed for five years.

I might have mentioned this somewhere else, but....

I worked 36 years in the office of the local paper mill. Went from typewriters to the inception of the computer age. Thru abou 2-3 system upgrades and always threatened to throw th computer out the 2 story building. :hammer:

I did the invoicing of shipments to customers, credits/debits, consignment both domestic & export.

Retired back in August 2009. Went from barely making 10 hours a month to my first month happily putting in 30 hours.

With the no longer stress load and mental exhaustion it was easy to give more time to Jehovah.

I build dollhouses and scaled miniatures for a living. It started as a hobby when I first got married but when I had my last child in 2002, my husband told me to go ahead and stay home with the kids since I did pretty well selling via word of mouth, freelancing at local dollhouse shops (building their most difficult kits for a flat fee) then selling on eBay. Jehovah has really blessed me with this. I had a car accident in 2012 and slowed down a lot since, but I'm back at it, kinda. I lost my groove because of health and other life set backs. My kids and some of my "art" friends have been trying to get me back in it full time (which is nothing like full time work). Right now, I'm more focused on the spirituality of myself and family. I'll get there again if Jehovah's willing :)

I work in a digital library for a cultural institution.

We have old manuscripts and documents, rare books and especially a lot of newspapers from the 18th century onwards, and our work is to scan them in high quality and make them available to the public via web. That way even if the physical documents are too deteriorated or lost the information is preserved.

I take care of the computer part of the process, basically doing research about new library standards and ways to reduce the amount of human work in the process.

wow!!! its really amazing to see how Jehovah has been keeping his lovely people materially through this critical times hard to deal with.
for me,I'm a teacher ( mathematics) in a secondary school and i run a laundry shop alongside the teaching job.before now ive been a lecturer in a college of health technology.
and what i've learnt so far is that Jehovah is able to sustain us through this perilous times, yes he is able to.we just need to always talk to him in prayers about the challenges we are experiencing, and then we need to always try and display more understanding about the current situation of things in this satans world.Jehovah might not really give us exactly what we are asking for,but we can always trust that he knows exactly what we need and that is what he gives us.so we need to always show gratitude and always display a positive spirit.

i love to always remind myself the words of the apostle paul in
1 timothy 6:6
" To be sure, there is great gain in godly devotion along with contentment."

I have a full time job providing a warm lap for my cat, actively monitoring the location of the TV remote control, keeping my laptop keyboard keys from sticking and taste testing my wife's cooking. I have a part time job puttering, tinkering, imbibing and snoring. I try to take weekends off but since I'm self employed it's pretty much 24/7....:)

I started work in a Pizzeria, doing all the grunt work, never making the pizza though, but I went through three owners. Then tried apprentice electrician, then went into construction and learned to be a  cement finisher, then into computer service and support, then into cleaning, then now back into the same construction work though it's seasonal here on the coast. In the winter I deal with SAD, which is a fill time job to battling .

I was visiting an older (86) brother in the hospital today and we were just talking about jobs, sharing with each other what jobs we had over the years,  I'm 52 and counted all of the jobs I've had, and its only been 6.  I've had 3 jobs that lasted a year and a half each right out of high school, I wasn't fired or quit jut the jobs ended.  Then I had a couple that were 4 years each, the first one ended and the second I took a different job and it was the only time I had ever quit a job (that I loved too) to go to a different one.

That was 22 years ago, and I've been working as a Maintenance Mechanic II for the University of Washington ever since then.  I love my job, in fact it was what I always wanted to do since I was 14.  In 22 years I have never had a bad day at work, I look forward to going to work every day and the best part is I don't live in Seattle nor do I have to deal with thousands of people that live and work there.  My commute to work is less than 2 miles and I rarely see another car on the way to work.   Plus I only have to work with 3 other people and for the most part I'm busy working on stuff by myself.   I live 3 and a half hours from Seattle, in a tiny one stoplight town.  I have a 1 mile drive to the Kingdom Hall, and the grocery store.  Its the best of both worlds, a good State job with good benefits but without the busy hustle and bustle of the city.

I thank Jehovah every day for what I have and never take it for granted.  My heart goes out to all those who work at places and jobs they don't enjoy.  As good as I feel I have it, I still look forward to a time when we will all have meaningful jobs that bring us happiness and enjoyment.   ;)

I am a personal assistant in a development department of an automotive electronics company.

I love my job, because I have to deal with many different people, I have various interesting tasks and a very flexible timetable, so I can plan my theocratical issues without bigger problems ^_^
