perform the order of operations. In this case add 85 plus 65 = 120.

The perform addition and subtraction straight cross

25 minus 55 =  negative 30.

now combine negative 30 and 150 = 120.

That's my math teacher's answer.

You are right. I don't believe that the stated equation is correct.

It may be written incorrectly.

However, since it uses the word probably, perhaps this is a probability question.

In that case, the probability of this  being incorrect is one.

That picture reminds me of how statistics can be made to say what you want them to. I'll illustrate:

Answers to poll with a yes/no answer

  1. yes
  2. yes
  3. yes
  4. yes
  5. no
  6. no
  7. no
  8. no
  9. no
  10. no

Now, it seems obvious the answer to the question is "No" - after all, 6 of the 10 answers are "No"

But, the answer can just as easily be "Yes"

Look again -  4 out of 5 said "Yes" - if you just take the first five responses.

"Let all things take place decently and by arrangement."

It took me a moment to consider the punctuation.

Actually at school we were taught a mnemonic BODMAS to give the order of mathematical procedure.

BO was Brackets open

D - divide

M - multiply

A - add

S - subtract.

Given this order:

BO. (85+65). =. 150

No division. Or multiplication.

A add. 55+150 = 205

S subtract. 25-205 = -180.

So I still don't get that this is correct unless you ignore mathematical rules.

Although there seem to be other ways of interpreting BODMAS.

I was always told it was PEMDAS.

Parenthesis

Exponents

Multiply and Divide

Add and Subtract.

Multiply and Divide were taken in order as they occurred. Add and Subtract were also done in the order in which they occurred.

I'd keep the 150 in the parentheses, do the other calculation for - 30 then + 150 = 120.

Correct: Both acronyms yield the same result. Multiplication and division are performed in the order in which they appear in the equation.

Addition and subtraction are also  performed 'straight  across'. Using Bodmas or Pemdas, this would result in 120. Since there is an exclamation point in the sentence, it indicates 5 factorial, which is also 120.  If you enter this equation and the parentheses on a scientific calculator, the equation will equal 120 (aka 5 factorial)
