Dieting, going Low Carb

I started following the Primal (Paleo) style way of eating again. I really like the idea of 80/20 - adhere to eating style 80% of the time and allow 20% for less rigerous adherence.

I've found that it's far easier for us to eat non traditional meals for breakfast than to try to cobble together replacement breads and stuff using expensive non wheat flours. What I've found harder to deal with are times when insuffient time is allocated for lunch such as during long field service days.

There are tons of great recipes and ideas from other cultures that can be used to stave off boredom.

When I did the Atkins diet many years ago there was no negative information that I could find on Splenda. My wife prefers Stevia but it tastes as bad as the artificial sweeteners to me. I love tea but would prefer to drink it unsweetened rather than use Stevia. I don't believe everything I read on the internet. I know of no real research indicating that Splenda is bad. I have read that Stevia can not be called natural because of the way it is processed. (But since I don't necessarily believe what i read on the internet I really don't know.)

Splenda is a brand name. If you are interested in researching the effects of the product, you need to research SUCRALOSE the generic name for the product. There are plenty of scientific studies on the effects of it from a wide variety of scientific journals.

I know that Splenda is a brand name. I researched Splenda and cancer and Sucralose and cancer. Unfortunately most of the Web sites I read lumped Splenda together with Cyclamate, Saccharin and Aspartame. Then they talked about the negative effects of Aspartime. One Web site was by a doctor who kept giving his personal opinion instead of any facts.

Then I researched Stevie and cancer. After what I read about Stevie I think I will just throw away the Stevie my wife bought and go buy another bag of Splenda. That Stevie sounded really bad.

This is my personal opinion here, but, I strive to stick with natural sources of sweeteners simply due to the frequent changes in thought over the safety of the many artificial sweeteners. At one point, aspartame and saccharine were considered safe and now neither are considered safe. Sadly, I've seen the problems friends have had from consumption of many of them. I know it's a personal decision, so I won't preach any more than this word of caution.

I don't consider everything natural just because it comes from a plant. Man's processing can turn an otherwise healthy product into something unnatural. Maybe I will just use honey as a sweetener.

You can purchase a stevia plant and just put a leaf into your drink. I am on a cancer diet from an alternative Cancer specialist and it's the only sweetener considered safe, as it doesn't affect insulin levels in the body. When I went for my Pet scan they gave me a drink with Splenda in it to help light cancer areas in the body

Having worked as a Nutritiiona Specialist and a weight loss counselor, I will weigh in on some info re: Splenda / sucralose

From Snopes:

No adverse experiences or clinically detectable effects were attributable to sucralose in either study

I use about 2 teaspoons per day in my coffee. Two (2) cups of coffee and one (1) teaspoon per cup. I can use Stevia in coffee but it does not taste as good. As I said in an earlier post unsweetened tea tastes better to me than tea with Stevia in it.

I wish this tablet would stop changing the word Stevia to Stevie.

I have not seen any valid research study to contraindicate modest use of  Splenda or sucralose based products.  Yes, Splenda lost a law suit because its slogan was deemed to be misleading.  "Made from sugar so it tastes like sugar."There was no evidence in the case about Splenda turning into formaldehyde (a sister likes to bang this drum as well as saying that splenda turns to antifreeze.), or the chlorine ion in Splenda being different from other chlorine.  http://www.splendaexposed.com/articles/2007/05/equal_splenda_s.html      Interestingly enough, formaldehyde is formed every day in our bodies, naturally http://www.eco-usa.net/toxics/formaldehyde.shtml

Maybe the next artificial sweetener on the market will be another form of anti-freeze, who knows? Then you know you have used too much. Modest amounts don't have this effect. Not trying to start a controversy, but attempting to give a balanced suggestion. I have read anecdotal claims, but have not seen any scientific tests done using the proportional amount that an average human would use.  Just a thought: YS

Pauline there are two studies in the Journal of Toxicology discussing the effects of Splenda on gut flora. Specifically they are finding it destroys up to 50% of the beneficial bacteria.

Thanks, even though I use a minuscule amount, if I am having coffee or tea in the morning, I really don't need it. I am always looking for nutritional improvements, and may easily dismiss any sweet taste in my occasional coffee or tea. From my understanding of these rodent studies, an extraordinarily large amount of substances were used. Right now, I am working on increasing fiber, as I have been living la vida lo- carb, and would like to include more fiber, like using benefiber regularly. I get most of my carbs from vegetables, as well as my fiber, (also nuts for fiber), but am still tweaking this. MY doc is happy with my health improvements (I was at death's door by the end of March), but am flummoxed by my raise in triglycerides.  I am also ready to increase exercise per my cardio. It's true, the story of nutrition in this system has not been completely written. What delights will the new world bring?

There is one interesting sweetener I have read about and used. It is called apple juice. I saw an interesting recipe for lemonade. You use a juicer and juice about 3 lemons and one apple. It tastes excellent. You might have to adjust the recipe depending on the size and sweetness of the apples you use.

I like to use the Champion juicer. I believe that juices I make at home are much better than juices you buy in a store that have all those crazy ingredients in them. Instead of drinking water that came out of man's processing plants I prefer the water than came from Jehovah's processing plants.

I have been consistently low carb-ing it for 5 months, and my docs are supportive. Except, my total cholesterol and triglycerides have jumped up. My primary is not worried b/c my HDL is so high, she feels it normalizes every thing else. Cardiologist is upset with overall higher cholesterol count and took another blood test today. BMI 23, goal of 22 BMI. I am taking red yeast rice and coQ10 rather than statins. I read (one longitudinal study) that after two years on low carb, triglycerides and LDLs were lowered. Should I try to ride it out, try statins, exercise more, or make some dietary tweaks like beans, psyllium, or something else? I read a study which said the occasional drinker has higher cholesterol than regular heavy drinkers  :drink: Confusing, as my primary recommended some alcohol, such as wine. Red wine tends to trigger my allergies. :perplexed:  Has anyone had to work through this? I find low carb easier and less expensive than the typical low calorie/low fat diet, and I'm not a bit bored with selections.  :unsure:

I have few questions...

I felt so hot and sweat a lot... Is it normal?

And, can I use honey mask? I know this is silly, but I don't want this honey mask ruin my effort of consuming low carbs... I mean I don't eat the honey, but I put it on my face, somehow it's absorbed into my skin, which is part of my body... So, is it okay? Somehow I feel this question is silly but important to me.. Please don't laugh!

I don't think skin absorption can have big impact on your diet...  I wouldn't worry ...

Even though your skin absorbs about 60% of materials that are applied or exposed to the skin (topically).

But what would be 60% of the honey that you apply on your face .. not  much ... hope so.

I use sauna twice a week and I have noticed  skin improvement no absorption there ...  zero ... nil.. nada.... and plenty of water !

I also heard about hi cholestrol in low carb... I have not yet checked my body... But, I try to consume healthy fat...

Are you doing low carbs by consuming products marked as low carb? Or by consuming more veggies, fruit with protein?

Mostly salads with chicken, but sometimes I put in a few water packed mandarin oranges, so I can get some carbs from fruit, but I get most of my carbs from fresh vegetables, mostly green.

Add ground flax seeds and increase your cardio. Apparently with weight loss and detox it is eliminated in the blood too which may cause a rise in LDL/HDL. Try adding 1 mg of Molybdenum to your daily vitamins it helps rid the body of toxins. Eat some low glycemic fruit all the berries are so helpful in so many ways.

Leslie, I'm going to get the shrimp and bacon this week and make them, we'll figure this out. I was concerned about the bacon not being done too. I think I'll par cook the bacon so it's crispy when it's done. Get back with you on this, fun!
