Yes, the prominent gay character is going to cause some uncomfortable consciences.

As evident by some of the comments that followed this, lol :P

It's like shows are going out of their way to present homosexuality as normal and acceptable.

Most definitely. It's wasn't called the "gay agenda" for nothing now.

For me it comes down to the fact that I have kids. The public schools are now pushing homosexuality and transgenderism as normal and acceptable. Middle school students, who are confused as it is just by dealing with puberty, are questioning their sexuality and being encouraged to experiment in numbers unprecedented from just a few years ago. There are LGBTQ+ clubs, and if you don't support it, you're the odd one out. What a flip flop from just 15-20 years ago! It's necessary that I counteract this colossal brainwashing effort at home, and not play along with it by watching it on TV with the kids.

I might have if I didn't have to parent. Maybe I would if they were older and wiser. But for now, Star Trek is out. We dropped Supergirl last season for the same reason. We're struggling to kill off Doctor Who at the moment.

I agree that I do not like to watch shows that are making being gay the main emphasis even though the plot of the show has nothing to do with that.

That said, for me, it is simple economics - since the main show will be on a paid service that I don't subscribe to ..... it is out. This is odd since I have been a Trekkie since TOS first aired in the 60's.

I saw the first two episodes and I must say that that homosexual relation is like nothing. It is inferred on the first 5 minutes of the show that the main character is gay but that is in no way important on the plot.. after that 30 seconds scene there is no mention of anything related directly or indirectly. in fact there is no mention of any relation whatsoever between the characters...

For now I found the series very good! very good plot (this isn't like the first shows where each episode has it's own plot). It has resemblances with the Expanse plot (which I like also and has a worst scene involving a male and female character, also only in the first episode of the first season)

It appears that the war between the Klingons and the federation is the main plot but in the second season we learn that there are bigger and more interesting things happening...

Lot's of science talk (very well described and trying to make sense, not just unconnected science words, like quantum mechanics, gravitational wave, ripple effect, etc...)

That's my initial review :)

Well, until the show is broadcast on the open CBS network (regular TV) - a good review is of no avail .... if the program is not accessible except through a pay service, I still won't be watching it.

(Note: due to the "acronym mouse-over expansion", CBS shows as "Congregation Bible Study" - but, in this use, it is "Columbia Broadcasting System" [the CBS Entertainment Network] - I hope this clears up any potential confusion)

Interesting. I heard the Beauty and the Beast thing was blown way out of proportion also.

Honestly, it was hyped mostly by people with an anti-gay agenda. They hyped those few seconds to further their agenda. Politics...

Unlike Beauty and the Beast, Star Trek Discovery will have multiple opportunities to revisit the theme.

Phillipians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are of serious concern, whatever things are righteous, whatever things are chaste, whatever things are lovable, whatever things are well-spoken-of, whatever things are virtuous, and whatever things are praiseworthy, continue considering these things.

Unlike most here on the forum, I really really WANTED the new Star Trek series to be good. I have been such a fan of Star Trek from the beginning. But last night's episode (October 15) has made me do some serious re-thinking. First of all, they used the really bad word that I absolutely HATE to hear, and THEN, to top it off, there was a very uncomfortable scene between the two gay characters, which I had been successful in putting out of my mind.

Really??!! There was no reason for them to add either of those incidents to clarify anything at all in the plot. I'm so disappointed.

So now that I've seen a lot of reviews on the pilot episode, it seems to me they tried to desperately cram as much "inclusivity" and "political correctness" into a series that was always very inclusive and politically correct for its time respecitvely

Star Trek - TOS had an intelligent and skilled black, female officer (in a skirt), an Asian lead character and even a Russian during the time of the Cold War

Star Trek TNG - had a female, strong security officer (in pants) and a black, super-intelligent, highly skilled blind man

Star Trek DS9 - had a charismatic and diplomatic, black leader and a headstrong, female security officer and even a somewhat transgender character

Star Trek Voyager - had a charismatic and diplomatic female leader, another black character and another Asian character

and so on.

It seems they desperately tried to cram more of this political correct narrative desperately into a new format, but this time it just didn't work. All I hear about the new crew is that they are horribly forgettable and unsympathetic characters.

I personally think the Klingons look like some kind of weird fish-monster from a 50'ies horror / sci-fi movie.

It feels good to give another regurgitated reboot of one of your childhood favorites a pass. I look forward to doing the same for the new Star Wars movie coming out.

I have alays been a Startrek fan, but the new show was a major disappointment in all areas. I thought the special effects were on the level of a cable TV show, which is what the show is designed to be, and the bridge lighting and look was horrible. Even the "Apple store" Look in the two recent movies looked far better. I had decided to pass after seeing the pilot before I heard about the gay agenda the show will be pushing. Everyone will have to make their own decision as it should be. I would bear in mind that the Gay subplot will expand over time. They would cut back if it affected the cash flow, but the world has changed and they would probably lose more money if they cut the gay subplot. I expect the gay infection to spread throughout the entire entertainment world. I thought the old time friends who had not seen a movie since "The Sound of Music" were a bit extreme. But now since broadcast TV in America is long dead with little worth a look, we haven't watched much broadcast TV in years. I have been spoiled by watching movies in my dvd collection that I have selected. We can watch a great movie when ever we want. No ads, no nude screens, etc. I am leery of watching broadcast TV, even some of the ads are too much. If I come across a good deal on the original series with the improved special effects, I plan on adding it to my collection. I enjoy not being overly connected to the world's entertainment and find it gives me more peace of mind.

I remember Star Trek TNG employed a large panel of tech specialists who developed nutty, but mostly somewhat scientifically accurate (as far as theory goes) ideas into the episode plots.

Okay, I admit not every TNG episode was great. Especially the one with Beverly Crusher and the space ghost.. Eeesh..

After TNG, they really didn't seem to be that much bothered to make sense anymore.
