The Mysterious Coronavirus Spreading Worldwide

Recommended Posts

Several websites seem to indicate that above 90%, isopropyl alcohol loses it's viability as a disinfectant.
I would use 70% for disinfecting, 90%+ for cleaning computers and tech.

Do be careful to not breathe the fumes and don't handle it excessively... it can poison you the same as alcohol, or cause skin to crack and dry.

Why above? I've heard the opposite- that if using a mixer for a hand sanitizer, alcohol should be at least 91% to compensate for the dilution.

Everclear would work well, too

How to make your own DIY hand sanitizer - Trying to buy sanitizer around my area, even at the Dollar Store, is getting impossible, so why not make your own? It's simple. What I did today was went to my local grocery store ( non available of course) and bought 1 bottle of 70% isopropyl alcohol and a couple pump bottles of aloe gel. I had a near empty small pump bottle so I filled it 1/3 aloe & 2/3  alcohol, shaking it up, that's it done, with plenty left over as we run down on the already mixed bottles. The picture on the far right is the DIY bottle, simple.

Thanks for the recipe, Brother Lee.

Hope your 70% isopropyl alcohol isn't too weak to kill the virus...if it is, just switch to the 99% vodka. :D

Those with Diabetes already have dry skin ... so using soap may be more beneficial. I'm saving my sanitiser for public places where soap is not available but it does dry out your skin.

I have lots of Aloe Vera growing so will get some rubbing alcohol and mix the two - plus I have a kit of essential oils.

I was critical of people grabbing water for a virus attack ... however, interestingly, the water pressure in some countries is going down because people are washing their hands more. Good they are listening, but may have side effect of less water.

It may be different in a mix, yes. This guide explains that IPA on its own requires water as a catalyst to kill microorganisms.

https://blog.gotopac.com/2017/05/15/why-is-70-isopropyl-alcohol-ipa-a-better-disinfectant-than-99-isopropanol-and-what-is-ipa-used-for/
"The presence of water is a crucial factor in destroying or inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microorganisms with isopropyl alcohol. Water acts as a catalyst and plays a key role in denaturing the proteins of vegetative cell membranes. 70% IPA solutions penetrate the cell wall more completely which permeates the entire cell, coagulates all proteins, and therefore the microorganism dies. Extra water content slows evaporation, therefore increasing surface contact time and enhancing effectiveness. Isopropyl alcohol concentrations over 91% coagulate proteins instantly. Consequently, a protective layer is created which protects other proteins from further coagulation.

Solutions > 91% IPA may kill some bacteria, but require longer contact times for disinfection, and enable spores to lie in a dormant state without being killed. A 50% isopropyl alcohol solution kills Staphylococcus Aureus in less than 10 seconds (pg. 238), yet a 90% solution with a contact time of over two hours is ineffective."

Edit: I misspoke before, above 90% IPA loses practical effectiveness.

Anyone who says, "Panic!" has no data to back up that comment.  Conversely, anyone who says "It's all cool, don't worry," has no data to back up that, either.  I'm really beginning to wonder if we're going to see Spanish flu-type numbers when this is all done, and I also wonder how badly various economies around the world will be hit.

The wise course is certainly the middle ground and as jw.org said listen to authorities and don't panic.

There is something interesting going in with the Washington coronavirus infections..... No infections in Bellevue, nor Redmond where Microsoft has extensive facilities. Seattle has a huge homeless population why no infections?

Reported in the Seattle Times, Seattle has it's first known case of the coronavirus.

I'll be very surprised if I have my job in two weeks - direct cause - this virus. Every week is a cherry on the top right now. I know Jehovah has me though - he gave me this job - he will look after us.

My Brother Tom lives in Renton, just outside Seattle. :(

Coronavirus is sparing children, puzzling experts:

Quote

As the novel coronavirus spreads around the globe, sickening more than 90,000 people and killing about 3,000, doctors have noticed something curious: Very few children have been diagnosed with it. And of those who have, most have had mild cases.

Good news for me since I am flying to Montana in a couple weeks to see my first Great Grandchild.  Since the virus is in Oregon they are a bit unnerved by it all thinking I might pick it up at the airport.

We cannot incite if we are not in sight.___Heb.10:24,25
