Moderna becomes third Covid vaccine approved in the UK

A third Covid vaccine has been approved for use in the UK.

It is made by US company Moderna and works in a similar way to the Pfizer one that is already being offered on the NHS.

The UK has ordered an extra 10 million doses of this vaccine, taking the total order to 17 million, but supplies are not expected to arrive until spring.

Around 1.5 million people in the UK have had at least one dose of Covid vaccine so far.

That includes almost a quarter of those aged over 80 in England.

Elderly Britons are REFUSING to take Pfizer's Covid vaccine because they'd rather 'wait for the English one' with the POLICE getting leftover doses so they don't go to waste

Elderly Britons are refusing the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine because they'd rather 'wait for the English one' and failing to turn up for appointments as ministers scramble to turbo-charge the jab's roll out.

Over-80s have turned their noses up at the Belgian-made shots in Stockton-on-Tees and insisted on having the Oxford jab, according to Dr Paul Williams who is administering the vaccine to residents.

And missed appointments led to up to 10 police officers receiving their first doses in Nottingham to prevent vital supplies going to waste. Once defrosted from -78C (-104F) doses of Pfizer's jab — which trials have shown is more effective than Oxford University's rival jab — must be used within days, official guidance from the UK's regulator says.

An Overview of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may not be in advanced stages of development yet like some of its competitors, but the company is moving forward with positive results and expects to seek emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by early 2021.

Johnson & Johnson's vaccine is being studied as a single- and two-dose adenovirus-based vaccine. The science behind adenovirus vaccines has been around for a long time. Recombinant adenoviral vector vaccines vaccines are a type of recombinant vaccines.

Early results show that a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine could induce 97% of study participants to make antibodies that effectively neutralized the virus in the laboratory, but clinical studies to see how well the vaccine actually prevents disease are awaited. Additional information on the effectiveness of the vaccine is expected in early 2021.

Secondly, it helps make a vaccine temperature stable.

The vaccine technology we've used can remain stable for two years at -4° F, and at least three months at 35-46° F, which is about the temperature of your home refrigerator. It may be stable for even longer at refrigerator temperatures, and we are actively collecting stability data now to see how long we can go. We believe this stability will help make it easier to transport and distribute our COVID-19 vaccine candidate without the need for shipping at special temperatures.

Sounds like the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is really promising.  Single dose and can be stored at temperatures above freezing.

The really sad part here is that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are likely safer than the Oxford one.

Reasoning: Pfizer and Moderna are RNA vaccines. Oxford uses an adenovirus as its vector.

All risks and side effects registered so far are only snapshots of the past months, this must be noted despite all the excitement about the rapid vaccine development. Nothing is yet known about possible long-term effects of the individual vaccines. There is a lack of information about possibly severe side effects  Only the long-term studies that accompany the vaccinations worldwide, and will continue since approval, will provide clarity.
Such side effects only become apparent after many people have been vaccinated and after a longer observation period. "There is therefore a residual risk," said Christian Bogdan. "How high that is will have to be examined in the coming months and years."  (Christian Bogdan, director of the Institute for Clinical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene at Erlangen University Hospital, who is also a member of the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).)

Yes that's the whole point of taking part in trials...we cannot know for sure the long term effects but its encouraging to hear after a week the friends feel fine.  The developers of the vaccine count on feedback over the coming years to document long term effects and thats important for when it's eventually administered to teens and children.

The Pfizer vaccine appears to be working against the new variants.....

The research has yet to be peer-reviewed, but experts expressed cautious optimism at the findings.

“This is good news, mainly because it is not bad news,” said Stephen Evans, professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

“Had the opposite result been found, that the vaccine did not seem to have efficacy against the variation of the virus studied, that would have been bad and very concerning.”

Does the average person actually fully understand they are taking part in mass trials?  Do they comprehend that nothing is yet known about possible long-term effects of the individual vaccines?  These effects will only become apparent after some months and years.

And when it comes to children, Christian Bogdan said they should not be vaccinated. Their risk of dying from COVID-19 is close to zero, he said. National Bakery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has introduced a unique product to help customers heading into 2021. The bakery’s new donut ‘vaccine’ kits look to be the perfect prescription for the New Year.

Each kit ($16) features six glazed paczki and six food grade plastic syringes with raspberry filling for customers to fill on their own.

Who is this?  Yes, I see your description of him, but who is he in relation to this discussion and what makes him an authority that I should listen to on this subject?

Additionally, your comment would have been an excellent opportunity to cite the reference so others may become as informed as you are. We could read his comment in context.

I noticed at least two previous comments mentioning that normal citizens are part of a “trial,” and I need to correct you, because these are the actual facts:

- the three stages of trials have already being undertaken (and I’m fairly sure, concluded too)

- at least 8 vaccines have finished the main trial stages, 3 have been approved in the “western sphere”

- some of the drugs have been approved under “emergency use” but don’t let that term confuse you; they still have to meet essentially the same requirements as all other drugs, only the waiting periods (multiple years) between trials, etc, have been eliminated

- people being offered the moderna, pfizer, or astrazeneca vaccines are NOT being asked to partake in a trial

- the fact that healthcare systems continue to study any and all side effects that any vaccine recipient reports, does not mean a large ‘test’ is happening on these people; the monitoring of drugs never actually ends! That’s how medicine has always worked. It never “concludes.”

Yes I think it's common knowledge the trials are not over its not a secret when the vaccine started development and the vaccine companies themselves have published timelines that stipulate trials will continue through to at least 2022.

Regarding children it is again common knowledge that children have near zero risk of suffering serious illness or death from Codiv19 but since they are rolling out mass testing of children of secondary school age (12 and over) in th'e UK ,  they are obviouly seen as potential healthy risk to themselves or others to some degree.  It is therefore only a matter of time until they are vaccinated, as a premptive mesure as is the case is recommended in America for the flu.   The Wall Street Journal recently quoted Cody Meissner, a professor of pediatrics at Tufts Children’s Hospital and a member of the federal advisory board that makes recommendations to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (see below) as saying the  following ...

In a press release issued by the Global Goal: Unite for our Future' Summit a European forum dedicated to ending the pandemic , it was started that " the task will only be completed when vaccines, tests and treatments are available and affordable to every child, woman and man who needs them" .  We can only guess if this will be in months or years.

While it is unknown what, if any, long term results of the C-19 vaccine(s) may be - it is just as unknown what, if any, of the long term results of contracting C-19 may be.

As for children having a smaller risk of death from C-19, that does not preclude them from suffering any effects of actually catching the disease - think of how many children had a "mild case" of chicken pox as a child ... only to suffer from shingles later in life.

In our area, since we have very high profile young sports participants in the high schools and the college, there have several who survived C-19 just fine - so it seemed - that are now suffering from heart, lung and/or kidney problems.

It would seem that, with C-19, since it is so new of a virus, it is a toss-up as to which may have more (if any) long term effects/problems ... taking a vaccine to not get it or getting it and recovering from it.  There has not been enough time pass to know which has the worse, if any, long term effects.

What is known, from the many that have died from it, the short term effects for those people proved very deadly.

This is true, few children have died or suffered serious consequences from covid19. I guess the reasons to vaccinate them are to prevent them from infecting adults (not sure if the existing vaccines stop infections) and in case some of the new variants are more harmful for children.

Anyway I guess children are last in the queue.

Majority of the info I summarized, I learned by reading multiple pages across two main websites: Wikipedia and Government of Canada. But ya, we can dissect them further. Where we should start though 😱

I’ve also been talking to some scientists and doctors online, watching short documentaries, etc. So sometimes it could be hard to pinpoint exactly which tidbit I picked up from where, but I should be able to find references to all the points I mentioned. Will just take a while though... 😕

Thank you all for your replies, because the more we discuss this, the better informed we are about taking (or not) this vaccine.  It is totally understandable to be nervous about this vaccine, given the speed of production and shorter testing times.  It’s become hard to trust well-known science regarding how vaccines work because of the misinformation over the years that all vaccines are bad, when clearly they are not.

So in order to make our own personal choice regarding this one, we need to strip away the “noise” from anti-vaxxers from legitimate concerns about the vaccine. Of course ,most are approaching this cautiously but are not averse to the concept of vaccinations. We know vaccinations work, or we’d have a world full of polio etc again.  And that minute risk carried by those vaccination programs of the passed are not valid to reject vaccinations per se.

Making a comment with references, as requested, makes it more informative and helpful for us to make this important decision.

I think this is an excellent point.  Our immune system is designed to fight off illnesses, but if you have these serious side effects (and the so-called “long-covid” symptoms) you are left like this until the new world.

It answers the question that even for children, it may be wise for them to have the vaccine to PREVENT the worst of the symptoms as they would be stuck with it for a much longer time.

Queen and Prince Phillip had their jabs yesterday, and it was reported on to help with gaining confidence regarding taking the vaccine.

”Royal officials said they took the rare step of commenting on the monarch's health in order to prevent inaccuracies and further speculation.

The Queen "decided that she would let it be known she has had the vaccination", the palace statement said.”

Polio was pretty obscure before the twentieth century. The polio epidemics began in 1916.
The polio virus travels in water so therefore can be spread by drinking water or eating raw or undercooked food that is contaminated with the feces of an infected person.
Global health numbers show there are now more children being paralised by viruses originating in vaccines than in the wild.
Most of the vaccine-derived strains of polio are in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but now these rogue strains of polio are also turning up across much of sub-Saharan Africa, Yemen, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Vaccine-derived polio is caused by remnants of earlier versions of the live virus used in the oral polio vaccine. The vaccine can be shed through feces. In places with poor sanitation, the vaccine can be spread through wastewater. Over time, the virus from the oral vaccine can replicate, regain strength and become just as virulent as the original virus against which it's supposed to protect.  The WHO states. “It’s actually crazy because we’re vaccinating now against the vaccine in most parts of the world,”
Wild polio has decreased dramatically because of improved sanitation, hygiene, nutrition etc.  However vaccine-derived polio outbreaks are becoming more probable over time.  Over time the virus from the oral vaccine starts to regain strength and if it's allowed to circulate long enough, it reverts back to the point that it can cause paralysis just like the original virus.  The more you vaccinate, the more live virus continues to circulate.
