'Godzilla' Sahara Dust Cloud Heading for U.S. May Be Biggest for 50 Years

BY HANNAH OSBORNE ON 6/23/20 AT 7:02 AM EDT

The "Godzilla" dust cloud from the Sahara heading towards the southeastern U.S. is one of the biggest recorded for 50 years. The cloud is expected to bring beautiful sunsets to states including Florida, Texas and Louisiana.

The plume, which is believed to be the thickest in decades, has now reached the Caribbean Sea.

According to the Associated Press, experts have nicknamed the plume "Godzilla," with Pablo Méndez Lázaro, from the School of Public Health at the University of Puerto Rico, telling the agency: "This is the most significant event in the past 50 years. Conditions are dangerous in many Caribbean islands."

Col. Doug Hurley:
We flew over this Saharan dust plume today in the west central Atlantic. Amazing how large an area it covers!

On Friday, Dan Kottlowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist and lead hurricane expert, told the website: "According to scientists that I have gotten some information from, they're saying this is an abnormally large dust cloud. One of the things I noticed from this is the dust started coming off the coast of Africa several days ago, in fact maybe over a week ago. And it's still coming.

The NASA Earth Observatory said the thickest part of the plume appears to stretch around 1,500 miles across the Atlantic.

2020 has been a strange year, but you can add massive 6,000 mile long Saharan dust plume to the list. A Saharan dust storm that moves over the Atlantic Ocean happens, but a dust plume of this magnitude is more rare especially one that makes it to the Great Lakes. A milky white sky and colorful sunrises/sunsets are possible as a result by the weekend. The Atlantic Ocean will likely have low tropical activity for the next week or two as well. Breathing problems are not expected in Ohio as the dust will be suspended thousands of feet above the ground.

The storm brings “a mass of hot air, with very little humidity, which in turn contains biological and chemical materials that are potentially harmful to respiratory health,” Ibis Montalvo Félix, the asthma expert for the Puerto Rico Department of Health, told the New York Times. “This phenomenon, an annual recurrence on the island, is considered an environmental trigger for asthma symptoms.”

So, the storm is an annual event.  Just this time might be larger than previous years.

Yeah.  Usually, these storms are just Indominus Rex's.

This one is a Godzilla.

It is a larger one. We've been under it here in the island for the past two days.

National Weather Service said it was a 50-year event. You can't even see mountains or even trees at a certain distance.

Are you staying indoors?  Or is the dust so high up that your lungs don't breathe any of it in?

Whatever, I pray you stay safe, Brother Juan. :(

Thanks for all your prayers. I was at work, but it's on an office building. At this moment, the dust is high, but the recommendation is to stay indoors anyway and avoid any unnecessary exterior activity. But timing was perfect; it came (the dust cloud) when we're not preaching outside. We're very happy doing it by phone, letters and video conferencing. And we all feel safe and protected by Jehovah.

We've had some crazy weather here in the UK. I've had constant headaches due to the constant storms we've had for the last couple of weeks (I don't usually get weather headaches). We also had a couple of tornados not far from us (very rarely seen here).

It started out bright skies and sunny, suddenly hail stones fall for ten seconds. Then a bit later a black cloud came overhead and we had a really bad electrical storm, lots of fork lightning coming down across the estate, but the sky was still half and half, the bright summer's day could be seen behind the cloud overhead. The air smelled of burning rubber.

After that the consistant storms happened for several days, and heatwaves following afterward. It's still doing it right now, weird bipolar weather (the type of conditions that promote things like tornadoes).

If you have any respiratory conditions, like asthma, it may be best to avoid doing outdoor acclivities and exercise. The dust cloud is decreasing the air quality, making it harder to breath for some people.

Yes.  By 8:00 am Sunday morning EDT, it will pretty much be EVERYWHERE...to a degree. :D

Well, 7:30 am Sunday morning looks pretty normal.

Seems like this is an annual event that is being blown out of proportion.

Anyone further south than Ohio in the US see anything of this dust storm?  Is your day or weekend adversely affected?  Let us know.
