I don't drink alcohol -others responses and mine to them.

Recommended Posts

It's interesting the responses I get to when I tell others I don't drink any type of alcohol. Did I ever drink some? Yes. Not very much. I had my last beer almost 25 years ago with my dad. Do I have a problem? Nope. Am I an alcoholic? Nope. Just chose to stop drinking due to the fact of alcoholism running in my family, a good friend was killed by a drunk driver and lastly I didn't enjoy the taste. It's well known in our area to JW friends and worldly people I don't drink at all, including the employees at Grocery Outlet are only grocery store in our area.

During the Covid-19 lockdown I ended up buying a bottle of wine for the Memorial at our home. This shocked the girl at the Grocery Outlet, but actually led to a beautiful witness. I still get the puzzled look when people find out I don't drink. None come outright ask why, but you can see a look of fear or embarrassment in their eyes. When this happens I give a brief explanation why I  choose not to drink, that I am not offended by the use of alcohol and then give a scriptural comment about drunkenness. I have had good Bible conversation when people find out that I don't drink.

My wife does not drink either. When I am out with others and the driver I often get free food and beverages for being the designated driver!

...my sentiments exactly. Most alcoholic beverages -- beer, vodka, whatever -- I just don't like! Wine, though, is tolerable for me. Aside from that, a glass of water will do me fine!

You're not alone.

Same here. I don't like beer, and I rarely have any hard liquor, I might have a bourbon and diet coke occasionally but not often. I used to drink wine often but I don't anymore. We had dinner with friends last night and they opened a bottle of wine, I had half a glass.

I don’t drink either.

I just thought this subject was funny because I think 2 months ago I bought a bottle of wine. Had a small glass and it’s still practically full in the fridge.

I’d rather have flavored sparkling water 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Many years ago I had dinner at a steak restaurant with a couple state trooper friends (well, the wife was anyway 🤣) then we went into the bar and since I had a 60 mile trip home (winter time no less) naturally I had what they call a “virgin” strawberry daiquiri. Karen made the order and then in a few minutes raced back up to the bar and to make sure there was no alcohol put in it.

Her husband on the other hand…didn’t drive home. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Far too many 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

I like alcohol, too, but it has to be sweet. 😅  I don‘t need to drink. Like Loopy, I opened up a champagne bottle about 2 weeks ago, shared a glass with a friend, and it‘s still sitting in the fridge 3/4 full. My husband used to drink beer in the past, but now completely stays away from all types of alcohol. He says it’s because of health reasons (which is true - the liver and the brain can be adversely affected through over-consumption). For some they worry that any kind of alcohol is unhealthy, but I do believe that when a person is sick, a little bit of wine is not bad at all. Glühwein in the wintertime is a local tradition many drink around here. Sweet kind of wine, but a little too sweet for me.

What really puts me off, though, is the calorie count. :whistling:

My daughter and her husband have their bartenders license because they work at special events where they work. so they've made different kinds of mixed drinks for us to try at times.  But I don't really drink much besides a pack of coolers that we may buy once a year that will last for many months.

My last drink was about 963 seconds ago. It was a Japanese whisky, Nikka Yoichi Single Malt to be exact, and it was very nice indeed. 🥰

But if anyone doesn't like to drink alcohol, that is fine by me. Everyone has their reasons, preferences and taste. But I don't drink wine, but my nose doesn't mind the smell of it, just my mouth and tongue doesn't like it.

I tried beer years age.  I was actually underage when I took my first drink.  I was still underage when I decided I didn't like beer.  I have drunk wine with my wife on some of our anniversaries but haven't in the elast 30 years.

My wife and I went to dinner at a restaurant with another couple.  They said that they normally had some wine and asked my feelings.  I said I usually don't, but I was not opposed to the idea.  My wife chose no to, but the rest of us had a glass of wine at that meal.

Over the years I have tried several mixed drinks.  I really like some mixed drinks but have not drunk any in about 30 years.

My youngest son, who is now 42 has never tasted any alcohol.  He understands the scriptural view but just decided it wasn't for him.

I know a couple of different ones that do not drink alcohol as they are alcoholic and I have a friend who does not drink due to health reasons.  Another friend a few years ago stopped due to a health issue.  Not drinking alcohol by choice for whatever reason is the same as not drinking any other drink imo.  Some don’t like coffee so don’t drink it.  Me personally I like many others do enjoy the taste of both alcohol and coffee.   I enjoy various cocktails and white wine.  Love a cold beer after mowing the lawn.  We ate out last night and I had a Lemoncello spritz and a glass of white wine.  My mother while I was growing up only ever had the occasional sherry and usually it was with lemonade.  In the last 3 years of her life she lived with me.  She developed a taste for Coopers Pale Ale, an Australian beer.  When we did the grocery shopping she always checked to see if we needed any Coopers!  We have a photo of her taken just a few weeks before she died, skulling a Coopers from the bottle at my nieces wedding.  So not my mother lol.  We plan on growing grapes and making wine in the new world.  All will be welcomed at our vineyard, non imbibers included.

I don't mind drinking alcohol at all.. I just don't think about it that much. I have a fully stocked bar, but a bottle of rum that's been there for over five years. I have a bottle of good vodka in the freezer; that will last me through the summer, most likely. When I buy wine, if it's not for an occasion, it easily lasts me a month or so.  It's all ready for a party at Uani's house... except I'm not really into parties. :D

I think it helps that I don't drink alcohol for an "medicinal" purposes. If I'm sad, feeling low, I have no desire for a drink. It just makes it worse for me. I need to be in a good mood or at least neutral. Maybe that's why my booze stays around so long... :shrugs:

I love coffee, but I generally only have one cup in the morning - that's it. Same with tea.  TBH, my favorite beverages are milk and water. :)  And chocolate milk?? I love that the most! ❤️  I also wish eggnog was available year-round.

I guess it comes across as slightly strange that so many know you don’t drink alcohol and to such an extent that you get a scared reaction at buying a bottle of wine.

I mean, I never get asked that question and don’t volunteer whether I do or not.
If someone offers me something and I don’t want it, I don’t feel the need to explain. I just say no thanks and ask for tea or whatever.

If I were to start volunteering info on the fact I don’t drink, I know people would assume I had a problem with alcohol or had religious reasons.

And just for the record I do drink occasionally.

It’s an odd thing for it to be a big deal.

Jer 29:11-“For I well know the thoughts I am thinking toward you, declares Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not calamity, to give you a future and a hope.”

Psalm 56:3-“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Romans 8:38-”For I am convinced...”

I chose to that for my own reasons and don't need to justify why I volunteer information about not drinking. You know what they say about the word assume. I find it easier to explain if I in your words "volunteer" such information.

You can live your life and volunteer the information you want. I am very happy letting others know I don't drink and why I made that choice. There are more reasons that I have not "volunteered" in this forum or others I may encounter.

I've never been much of a drinker.  A few sips of wine makes me woozy and weak legged.  My mother and grandmother have the same reaction.  And now there's research coming out on alcohol causing cancer so I avoid altogether.  My husband loves alcohol (he used to make wine with his dad) but he can't really drink anymore due to health issues.

I can't even drink a drop of alcoholic drinks. My face goes red and I feel tipsy. My brother (dec) who used to be a businessman and would come back inebriated, face flushed red and in a bad temper. I can tolerate a little wine in food like Shark's fin soup(no longer eating it) or if it is added during cooking. I also think it is an acquired taste. I read research that those who gets easily flushed in the face from alcohol, have a high risk of medical issues.

Flushing does not cause immediate health problems, but it may signal an increased risk of some serious health issues, such as high blood pressure and certain types of cancer.

I don't have high blood pressure but my low diastolic readings has been dropping to now 52. I recently found out how dangerous it is. All these while the doctors are telling me otherwise.

My late mother has the same symptoms and suffered a stroke at my age. I have now taken to drinking more fluids and eating more vegetables and fruits (all the precautions a person with high blood pressure would need to take)

I hear most Asians don't have the necessary enzymes to digest alcohol - hence the red face from a one sip.
