Which is more logical.... day/month/year or month/day/ year?

Down under we always write first the day/month/ year but when we moved to Canada we saw it was sometimes the same as Australia and other times it was month/day/year. So which is more logical? I hope this doesn't get as heated as when I started the Metric/ Imperial thread. :o)

I see it like units tens and hundreds. Units are days Tens are month and hundreds are years. so Day/Month/Year is obviously the right way.

This is one of those things that "logic" has nothing to do with it. 

 

dd/mm/yyyy is no more or less logical than mm/dd/yyyy not to mention yyyy/mm/dd or yyyy/dd/mm

 

It is more of a which do you like better thing - it is purely subjective.

 

Perhaps we should think of is as if we were to use the date in a sentence would we say March 14, 2016 (mm/dd/yyyy) or would we say it is 14, March, 2015 (dd/mm/yyyy)

 

Then again, what does "day" actually mean?

 

If we look again how we may use it in a sentence would we say March 14, 2016 or would we say Monday, March 14, 2016? would he latter be dd/mm/yyyy or would it be dd/mm/dd/yyyy?

In Europe we use day/month/year too. I think that order is more logical because it goes from the smallest unit to the biggest one.

 

On the other hand, when dealing with backups and other computer tasks, the best order is year/month/day, because that way files are automatically sorted chronologically.

We would say 14 March 2015.

 

As long as you write down the month name there's no problem, the confusion arises when you are using only numbers. For example, 8/5/2016 means August 5 2016 for an American, but May 8 2016 for an European.

That depends on how you look at it, there are only 12 months so the smaller range is first, then there are up to 31 days so the next larger range is second...

MM/DD/YYYY is more logical based on the range of available numbers in each category..

For those who use day, then month: today is 3.14 which is why some consider this to be pi day. Pi is actually 3.14159, so if you are observing this, the pi minute is at 1:59 today (and the other pi minute was 1:59 this morning).    Tomorrow is the Ides of March (March 15) which  was Julius Caesar's assassination day, 45 CE.  All Roman months had an Ides, not just March.   'Ide' is not an acceptable word according to Scrabble and Words with Friends. The word 'assassin' came from a group of hitmen that used hashish. Sorry, OT again, but it is idle chitchat. p.s. "Idle" appears to have nothing to do with Ides.

Right, except that we use the 24 hour clock also, which means that 1:59 PM is for us 13:59. So only one pi minute for us.

 

By the way, 'minute' can also refer to something very small. As a minute.

Exactly! I am often confused when I copy references from the forums and paste them in my Spanish Watchtower Library. I look puzzled at the articles until I remember the date format difference.

JUst read an article which corrects my previous comment by putting the date of Gaius Julius' (Caesar) death as Ides of March 44 BCE. I always get those two years mixed up.

 

It quotes Dante as saying that Brutus is in the depths of hell with Judas Iscariot. The IT book mentions Judas as one not eligible for a resurrection.  I can't get the link to work.

 

Back on topic: I think time should be listed nanosecond, millisecond, second, minute, hour, day, month, year.

In France, it's DD/MM/YYYY, in Japan it's YYYY/MM/DD

 I prefer the ISO standard of year-month-day. (2016/03/16).  It sound the most logical to me personally. Many countries have adopted this method.

But I think it depends on the country. In Canada for example, government forms such as passport applications and tax returns use the ISO standard YYYY-MM-DD. English language newspapers use MM-DD-YYYY. Unless you are in French -speaking parts of the country such as Quebec and New Brunswick, then they use DD-MM-YYYY.
