Updates to JW Library (iOS, Android, Windows)

Recommended Posts

You are kidding me?  You can highlight and make notes in your publications with the lastest JW LIB update?  I didn't see anyway I can do that yet.  Must go back and check things out again!  Thanks for the heads up!

Not yet. I am just thinking ahead.

Ohhh! O.K.  Hey there are enough anxieties for the next day - try not to worry too much until the update comes.  It's been over a year and a half coming to I expect they are checking everything from every possible angle on how to make it work the best for everyone!

I know I've been chompin at the bit ever since they announce a year and a half ago that those capabilities were coming.  Once we were able to download magazines and publications into the app, I thought for sure the highlighting and notes was coming immediately afterwards.  So, like you, I'm very curious about all of this too!  Need to work on my patience!

Don't live for the moment - live for the future! :D

With the latest update... the app works really slow for me. The problem is not in my tablet definitely because other apps run really smooth and fast. Oh i have Nexus 7v2 (5.0.2. android)

Our brothers are working hard to get the app to work as smoothly as possible with as many features as possible. Plus i see that they still support gingerbread which is 2.3. android. Most of the commonly used apps stopped their support for older devices. So let's be thankful and most of all patient while our brothers fix the app :)

Hmmm, I have no problem with speed after an update. I use ipad 4. With 32gb

The app is fast and responsive so I can see that "slow app" syndrom is not a universal problem.

Sorry to hear .. Brother.

And the issue doesn't seem to be limited to one OS - updated and running VERY slow on my iPad4 32gb, but great on my Galaxy Tab2.

Always some bugs to work out, but I'm sure our brothers are working on it.

It's quite funny, it appears different bugs affect different devices. For example, the audio Sing to Jehovah Vocals were downloaded in English- yet there is more than 20 songs that were downloaded in a different language. This was before JW Library added the language features. Deleting and reinstalling them solved the problem for me.

It was running doggedly slow on my N7 as well, I think that tablet generation is starting to die out. Moved on to a Dell Venue 8 7000 series.

Although i heard some rumors about N7 gen.2 failing after 2 years of use, and i know that it's a july 2013 model, i wouldn't agree on what you said. If the tablet is getting slow and dying out, it would work slow for other apps as well, which isn't the case. My N7 performances are about the same since the time i bought it... i can say even better since i overclocked the CPU and GPU.

Anyway it's a major thing that our brothers are doing with all those publications and all those languages. I really appreciate what they are doing!! We just need to be patient, that's all..

I don't know if this makes any difference.  There is a catalog / database file that JW Library uses.  Before the update it was less that 5mb.  Now it is over 20mb.  Could that extra data slow things down? (by the way, that's how I found out the titles of the new releases)

It is easy to see how well your Android phone or tablet is performing by running a benchmark program. The one I use is called Quandrant. You can download it from the Play store.

My Galaxy Tab 3 benchmarks at 9800 and my Note 4 at 26000. These are for comparison only but you can see how your unit stacks up against other makes and models.

Both my tablet and phone are slower at starting the JW app these days. I am sure that it is due to the much larger database. However, it seems to run just fine once it has loaded.

My Nexus 7 gen.2 benchmarks at 28878. As i said previously, the problem is not in the device. But as you said, once the app is loaded... it does goes smoother and faster. It's just the initial loading that is laggy.

For those who are having issues with the JW Library app (or any app, really), starting or running slow on their Android device, you could try wiping the cache partition. The way to go about this is different depending on the device, even different devices from the same manufacturer. On my S6 edge, for example, I hold the home, power and volume up button until it boots into the device menu, at which point I can opt to wipe the cache partition.

This does nothing to the data or apps on your phone that you use, but clears out a partition that is used to store "behind the scenes" app data that is rarely if ever needed by the user. This usually speeds up the device overall, can can improve app loading times and improve speed of functionality within some apps and even the Android operating system itself. If you have never done this that data builds up and can cause slow-down issues.

It's perfectly safe to do, as well. Just a thought.  :)

Sometimes that is how you update operating system from a file. That is how it is on Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. Used when rooting device or reinstall OEM operating system

Since nobody can rightly answer 'yes' until next week, I wonder if this week's question is an informal survey to see how many will try to get the publications early?

I've been trying my best to avoid looking for the convention releases. I want to receive the info at my assigned convention.

I'm so torn. On the one side I like knowing the releases in advance because it takes away the guessing. When I don't know, I keep wondering during each talk if it might be time for a release. It's kind of distracting.

But on the other hand it does feel good to hear of a new release when you weren't expecting it. It's special. You feel like a kid who just opened a present lol.

Very frustrating today. At the Regional Convention today I had my Windows 8 computer (Surface Pro 2). I went to open JW Library and as soon as it would start it would just stop and not open. Had no problems before on this computer. So now back at our hotel I uninstalled it, reinstalled it and loaded publications. Now it is doing the same thing. ??

You really do. I was good. I waited until the brother announced a new release and then downloaded. I was asked if I had attended my convention. I could honestly say yes. then I waited for the announcement. As soon as the announcement was made I clicked on day 1 then began the download & was able to follow along as portions were read. However, others had some difficulty downloading a little later on. I'm guessing the thousands of simultaineus downloads may have been a bit much.

Would you suggest that we download the publications before the convention so we can follow along with the speaker?

As you point out, we might not be able to download the releases as they are being released and we may miss the opportunity to follow along during the talk.
