Zoom, Skype Technical Q&A here:

Recommended Posts

The put their image by your name in the participants panel - letting the host (or anyone with the participant panel open) see the icon. They are intended to convey the message of their "name/meaning"

Of course, their intended meaning can be "changed" by those using the meeting if they agree to what a given icon means. For instance, the clock could be used to mean "time is up" if all attending knew that was the "meaning" for that icon before the meeting started.

Just like with us, even though the "blue hands" in the "..." (more) are actually "clapping" - we can use them to mean the same as the "raised hand" since the host and co-host do not have the raise hand option available to them.

Not sure if this is important to anyone. But..

On one hand it makes sense. But encryption may be a good thing if the GT broke out...

He's basically saying if you want encryption then pay for it, he's running a business after all. As for when the GT breaks out, pure speculation on my part but there will still be all our phone records, emails etc that they can hack into. We'll see.

Encryption isn't all that encrypted anyways..  Simply pull up Wireshark in the house and you can capture all internet traffic anyone is doing and see every site, every ip. Even when encrypted. I've never taken my laptop and tried to capture the network traffic at the hall though... might be an interesting experiment if we ever go back. Just to see how open we are to that kind of thing.

Regarding viewing traffic.....You don’t need wire shark or laptop....just access to the wireless router

...and of course make sure you have permission or you will be violating some laws

one of the things we taught during HOT (Hands On Training) was for a mature brother to review the internet usage

change password to internet access regularly...update firmware

regarding internet traffic....they should review this ‘ On a regular basis’

specifically for activity during meeting times and what sites were accessed.....

(this is in part to some written direction on controlling internet access)

the industry standard for these type of Audits/Reviews are monthly and/or quarterly

the industry standard for changing passwords is either 60 or 90 days

we also do this at the assembly hall now

(Consider some of this when implementing home security)

....even our meetings require a regularly changed password now......lol

@ the KH

there were some interesting things found

the things people surf ... even while @ the hall for a meeting

or kids playing head to head games across the hall during meetings

some times it was easy to determine who....other times it took a bit of effort

everyone should keep in mind that unless they have End-to-end encryption

then everything they do can be EASILY seen by someone

( think - guy who manages the network, router, desktop, pc, ISP internet service provider.....

and even with encryption ..... it can be viewed .... often easily.... by those of us in this line of work

we tell people ... don’t put anything online....on your computer...in your social media

that you wouldn’t put on a postcard......

I am sure it has been mentioned before, but I just found the keyboard input to unmute yourself for a comment.  If you press and hold the "space-bar" on the keyboard you unmute and when you release it the mute comes back on.

The reverse is true also, if you are already unmuted pressing the bar mutes you but I don't think that is quite as useful to me.

Yes, very handy mute/unmute procedure for PCs. I would like to see a simple way to raise the blue hand. A mouse click with the screen three feet away (I share the screen with my wife) is a little awkward. I use a laptop so the keyboard stays with the screen, the space bar is easy enough to reach for both of us, but the blue hand is not so easy. I have the mouse pad turned off and use a wireless mouse.

Yes, i now remember it being said before but since then I got a Webcam so now use the Computer rather than a tablet so that is a very useful tip to be reminded off. Thanks John.

The best way I have found using Zoom is with a Windows PC. Since my processor is an Intel I-7 my gallery view has 49 thumbnails displayed and because my Dell Monitor's screen resolution is 2560 x 1440 their size excellent.

Besides the space bar for mute/unmute audio, I have found in addition these shortcuts of excellent usage especially the screen share as it doesn't show mouse movement.

  • Alt+A: Mute/unmute audio
  • Alt+M: Mute/unmute audio for everyone except host Note: For the meeting host only
  • Alt+S: Launch share screen window and stop screen share Note: Will only work when meeting control toolbar has focus
  • Alt+F: Enter or exit full screen
  • Alt+Y: Raise/lower hand

Can someone help me? I created a Zoom account for our Samsung devices so that I could display a photo of my husband and me for when we turned off our video camera. The problem is that when I turn the video camera back on, we are not seen..only a grey screen. The account is a basic one. Appreciate any help...CO visit is tomorrow night!

The grey screen is indicating that the camera is not starting for some reason. Does the problem still happen when you open the Camera app? Reinstall the Zoom app to see if this fixes the camera problem.

From what I understand, that feature has been disabled if you on a theocratic meeting, but will work if you’re on any other Zoom setting.

Thank you, but several families at our meetings have a picture displayed instead of the black screen for when their video is off..including 2 elders and a ministerial servant. My question is..why does the screen show a light grey square when the camera is turned on? I updated the app in the play store, so maybe that will fix it?

What I have seen so far is that people with PCs connecting are not able to display a picture. I tried everything including zoom support and all it says your profile picture well that is if you use your account to host, but if you join from a PC I can't find a way to display a picture if the camera is turned of it just displays the name you logged on with.

However individuals that join through phones or tables that have as default images may have their pictures displayed since that is the default setting for that device. In our congregation we use the Google forms to join and you are required to use a name and how many are listening at your location. No way yo get a picture in it and if brothers log on bypassing the forms connection using Zoom ID and password, the idea to change the password has been floated around to force the usage of Google forms\ to make it easy for the attendants to get an accurate count.

Some on our zoom meetings were using that feature as well, including the COBE, the elders, the MS and some publishers! Accordingly, it was through the Branch that it, as well as the “Chat” feature, be DISABLED!  I don’t know if it’s across the board, but it definitely was not a ZOOM requirement.

I login with Windows 10, and my profile picture displays.
I also have the option (when I right click my name) to 'Edit Profile Picture'... so I expect there is a setting somewhere that you are not getting to... or it is blocked...

You're right. The branch expects all meeting organizers to block the participants' profile pictures. See ZoominstE-5/20 account settings (40).

You don't need to remove your picture. When the brothers set up the Zoom meeting it blocks the profile pictures. Your profile picture will still show up any other time that you use Zoom.
