Threads and their up's and down's - read on for clarification

Recommended Posts

Sometimes threads do not go where the OP thought they would. The discussion may get :offtopic: or may :boating: in an unanticipated direction. When this happens, the threads often suffer great "up's and down's"

To this end, I thought it was about time we had a thread where having these up's and down's are not only OK, they are encouraged because it is the whole point of the thread

The true theme of this thread is

Elevators

&

Escalators

:ecstatic:   You can talk about anything connected with elevators and/or escalators   :ecstatic:

  Looking forward to the up's and down's of this topic

Everything that 'elevates'  MUST come down at some stage so it's part of the process of elevating.

Interesting thread John ... I think what happens and correct me if I'm wrong ... but most of us in real life talk about the subjects we talk about here on the forum, but usually only when we are with ones of like minds - like there's a group in my congregation i feel fine speculating with -but wouldn't with another group. So when we approach subjects here as we would in real life - we are throwing open to allsorts of thinking/maturity levels, opinions and the feedback isn't always what we are used to when we normally speak about it.

Hence the highs and lows.

In some threads speculation is encouraged and expected, but then as in some recent threads if ones speculation varies to another it becomes a source of debate ... and that is where it gets interesting - i'm trying to learn the art of debate without making the other person feel like their perspective is wrong ... it's not it's just different and IF it is wrong they will correct themselves when they come across the relevant information in their time and Jehovah's also reserving the viewpoint I might be wrong and be willing to tweak my opinion if i do the research and find I'm wrong.

So yeah to escalate something as encouraged by the OP ... Peanut butter is not the best food is it? It seems the US is obsessed with peanut butter flavoured food - noticed at the supermarket this week ... that Reeses Peanut butter cups are selling really cheap and still not selling - so NZ can't be into that type of food as much. (We are more vegemite/marmite fans haha)

Actually, I really did intend to talk about elevators and escalators ...

I'm can't take heights. I know it's called an "irrational" fear - but I can't help it.

I think an elevator is a really neat thing. You can step into a "room" on one floor, stand there for  while and step out of the room and WOW! you're on another floor. However, they have gotten rather, shall we say - innovative - with some of the elevators. They make them out of glass and run them up the outside of buildings

I would NEVER be able to ride in one of those things, at least not while I am conscience :nope:

I have also been on some escalators where I had to stare at the steps so I could make it to the top still standing up.

I too cannot stand heights, although behind a barrier or glass I can cope. I have been up some towers which were high (Munich Olympic tower e.g.) and the top has a glass window or an outside with a high barrier. Those with a glass floor are a definite no-no!

There is no antonym for elevator that I can find.

Lowering by definition cannot be part of elevating.  We should elevate our thinking - does that mean we should lower it at times? Hmm.

Back in 2011 I went to NY with my oldest daughter. One of the main reasons to go was to visit Watchtower Farm and see the printing operation. I had a friend who had been serving there for nearly 30 years and he gave us a really nice tour.

On our trip to the farm we stopped at a shopping complex and, while my daughter went into one of the stores, I spent the time talking with a man who was teaching his helper how to work-on/fix the escalator. He was very knowledgeable about his trade and told me some very interesting facts and trivia about escalators.

While in NY we made several forays into the City. We did not have a detailed agenda for each of the days we went there. One thing we did have arranged was a "private tour" of the NY Times building (my daughter worked for a NYT company, thus the reason we got the tour) We rode in some very state-of-the-art elevators since this building was fairly new ... it was completed in 2007.

One of the unexpected things we did came from the man I talked to at that shopping complex. It turns out that Macy's in NYC has one of the only remaining "wooden escalators" still in use. We would not have known about it if I hadn't met that man working on the escalator. Turns out, riding the wooden escalator is one of the "10 things to do in NYC" on some of the tourist recommended lists.

We did locate and ride the escalator (in fact, we rode ALL the escalators in Macy's)

A slow-shutter picture of patrons on the sixth-floor escalators at Macy’s.

Many years ago I was on the escalator in a department store when a woman began screaming loudly for someone to stop the escalator because her child had caught some item of clothing in it. No one, including myself knew how to do that. Shortly, men that I believe worked for the store came and stopped it in time.

I never forgot that experience because I wished that I knew how to do that at the time and also for the future. One day I learned that there is a button located at both the top and bottom of the escalator that will stop it.

I don't know if there is anything different since then, and wonder if that subject might have come up in your conversation with those escalator experts.

It's a very good thing to know..if we ever get into a store again

One small crack doesn't mean you are broken; it means that you were put to the test and didn't fall apart..

what is an elevator that goes down called ?  It can no longer be an elevator because it is not elevating.

I don’t know the answer.

If elevators in Great Britain are called lifts, then

when they go down, why don't they call them drops?
(probably because that would terrifying😱)
