It would be a great excuse to continue the war.  Whatever it takes to get what you want.

Further on "excuses":   Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine (SZRU) and Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have issued warnings of a potential large-scale false=flag incident around the Russian Orthodox Christmas on January 6 or 7.

The assessment of this potential attack is that a religious site, or a site with a high symbolic significance, will be attacked and there will be many civilian casualties.  And, fragments of western drones salvaged from the war will be planted as "evidence" of western involvement, setting peace talks back to square-one.

This sounds like a script from Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne movies.

But, with the latest out of Venezuela, maybe this potential false-flag plan will not even be needed?  I saw one news headline that said Russia condemns the "aggression"

How long until an AI video appears on Truth Social showing paradise in Venezuela with Trump sitting on the beach?

My opinion: this is a power struggle between the king of the north and the king of the south. Venezuela is “protected” by Russia because they want allies and a military presence here in the Americas, close to the U.S., to confront NATO. If the United States were to take over Venezuela, it would directly disrupt Russian plans.

The US did just take over Venezuela

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday.

Interesting observation by the Associated Press:  The 15-member council has been surprisingly inactive on the issue of Venezuela for the last several months, even as US posturing and boat strikes in the Caribbean increased.

Oil is, indeed, a hidden treasure.

Just to add to your comment, not all crude oil is the same. Venezuela crude is typically heavy, sour and difficult to process. It has to be blended with other crude to be processed in most refineries. Having access to Venezuelan crude oil can supplement but not replace the crude oil the US is currently using.

The U.S. refines a mix, but its refineries are built for heavier, sourer crude, so the U.S. actually imports significant amounts of heavy crude (like from Canada) to blend with its predominantly light, sweet crude domestic production, as most U.S. refineries need that heavier oil for efficient operation and to produce specific products like asphalt and heavy fuel oils.

U.S. Production is Light & Sweet: The majority of oil produced in the United States (from shale, etc.) is light (thinner) and sweet (low sulfur).
Refineries Need Heavy Crude: U.S. refineries, with significant investments made decades ago, are optimized to process heavier, sourer (higher sulfur) crude.
Imports Fill the Gap: To run efficiently and produce all necessary products (gasoline, diesel, asphalt, etc.), the U.S. imports heavy crude, primarily from Canada, Mexico, and Colombia.
The Mix: Refineries use a blend of domestic light crude and imported heavy crude to maximize output and run efficiently.

The U.S. imports crude oil from Venezuela, primarily heavy sour crude processed by Gulf Coast refineries, with imports fluctuating due to sanctions and licensing but continuing under specific carve-outs, notably for Chevron's operations. While U.S. imports dropped significantly after 2019 sanctions, exemptions have allowed a resumption, making Venezuela a key supplier for specialized U.S. refineries, even as the overall volume remains a fraction of historical highs.

China is the largest buyer of Venezuelan oil (but that's only 4% of China's total imports). Cuba is the one country that will be adversely affected. They're already feeling the effects of the tanker embargo enacted in Dec '25

Quote

Cuba, which relies heavily on Venezuela for crude, has been the first to feel the pinch in constrained flows. Cuban premier Miguel Diaz-Canel said this week the disruption of crude supplies from Venezuela — including from the ship seized by the US earlier this month that appeared to be en route to Cuba — is creating a dire economic situation on the island.

Dolores Dobarro, a former oil vice minister, told Argus that some China-bound tankers laden with Venezuelan oil previously made quick stops in Cuba to offload some crude volumes, but that traffic has largely stopped following the US seizure operation on 10 December

KOTS hmmm? Well UK is not invading anyone, USA acts alone not as a duel power in this regard.

Duel world power? Not sure ... they seem to be very divided on the issues. But perhaps those issues do not erase the relationship they have as a duel world power?

Prime minister assures colleagues he may one day stand up to Donald Trump – but not yet.

Just take note that following comes from the state own Russian RT channel.

Russia treats its soldiers as warriors on a holy mission from God, President Vladimir Putin said after attending a Christmas service on Wednesday.

The president met with veterans of the Ukraine conflict and their families at the Saint George the Victorious Church outside Moscow.

“You should be rightfully proud of your fathers and your mothers, as the Russian people have always been proud of their warriors,” Putin told a group of children.

“We often call the Lord the Savior because he came to earth to save all people. It is the same with our warriors, because they are always, under the direction of the Lord, on a mission to defend the fatherland and its people,” he added.

“At all times, Russia has viewed its warriors as carrying out a holy mission under the direction of the Lord,” Putin said.https://www.rt.com/russia/630683-putin-russian-soldiers-mission-god/

Nah couple of years ago a Russian Orthodox clergyman commented the war in Ukraine was “a crusade to safeguard Orthodox values and the unity of the faithful.”

Of course, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is also Orthodox and, prior to the war, was a suitable place to worship for a Russian Orthodox if they did not have a local church of their own to attend.

I always reason that even as a single country the United States is extremely divided politically so it makes sense that the duel power can sometimes be divided temporarily.

Many are now asking whether the United Nations has any future at all if it cannot fulfil its first promise of maintaining international peace and security.

Has the UN reached the end of its lifespan?

It does, therefore, appear as though we are witnessing the collapse of the UN-led international peace and security system in real time.
