I think this app will eventually become the offline library we have been waiting for, with note taking capabilities, and be amazingly small in size.

The Forum Membership Policy has been updated as follows. By continuing your membership here, you agree to and are bound to the Forum Membership Policy, which may be updated and amended from time to time.

The following changes have been decided on by the Administrators. The highlighted portions we want you to pay special attention to.

Change #1: We added the following to....

    Commenting and Moderation

Are Certain Things Not Permitted to be Posted on JWTalk?

#) Misusing JW.org and its Services: The Terms of Use at JW.org makes the statement, "You may not: Misuse the website or its services, such as... accessing the website or its services using a method other than what is explicitly provided." Therefore, do not mine JW.org or it's affiliated services hunting for artwork, literature, or media that hasn't been officially released to the public yet. Spiritual food "is explicitly provided" at the proper time by the Faithful and Discreet Slave (Matthew 24:45) and not by individuals racing to be the ones to present it in place of them (Psalm 11:2).

Change #2: We added the following to....

    Speech & Conduct

What is JWTalk’s Code of Conduct?

#) Avoiding Spoilers: It's unloving to post spoilers about information that others would rather hear 'at the proper time' at their own meeting. Therefore exercise caution and use the built in "spoiler" tag/function to hide such details when appropriate. Since Regional Conventions are typically held around the world spanning several months, we have one dedicated topic for discussing each years Regional Convention. Only those who have attended their convention should view the topic, which is clearly marked that the discussion may contain spoilers for those who haven't attended yet. Do not post about a current year's Regional Convention in any other topic than this designated one. Do not read the topic if you haven't attended your convention and don't wish to have it "spoiled" for you.

Change # 3: We added the following to....

    F. Forum File Uploads

    3) JW Literature and Media: The Branch has repeatedly stated that we may share information from the organization’s official websites by sending a link, but according to the "Terms of Use" at JW.org and within the JW Library app, we should not post on the Internet any artwork, electronic publications, trademarks, music, photos, videos, or articles from our websites. This would include theocratic programs on jw.org or JW Stream, such as monthly broadcasts, congregation meetings, circuit assemblies, and conventions. Therefore, do not upload to our servers any literature or media that is available on JW.org and it's affiliated sites. Also, do not share links to unauthorized copies of content that has been uploaded to any file sharing, music sharing, or video sharing website.

    ^ NEW

The following is NOT a change, but since it hasn't been honored or enforced, we would like to draw your attention to it again....

    H: Copyrighted Content

    1) Ownership: Caution must be taken to respect the copyrights of others. All sites, whether public, commercial, social, personal or private--contain elements that are protected under copyright laws, whether they are original works, fixed works, works made for hire, commissioned works, or works that have been assigned. We reserve the right to edit or remove any post, image or other media that, in our opinion, constitutes a violation of the copyrights of any other individual or enterprise.

    2) Fair Use: You agree to become familiar with typical "Fair Use" laws and to use good judgment when submitting content to the JWTalk community. It is usually both reasonable and acceptable to include a quotation from an article or other literary work, or to reference a single image or photograph, in order to start a topic or that is pertinent or necessary to further a current discussion in the community. However, do not post entire articles or large portions of them from our publications or upload them as attachments to the forums or our Files Library. Likewise, do not upload content containing multiple image attachments that you do not have copyright ownership or rights to.

    3) DCMA Takedown: It is our policy to respond to all notices of alleged copyright infringement. If you would like to bring a copyright issue to our attention, please use the Contact Us form at the bottom of the page.

What does this mean moving forward?

    1) Do NOT mine JW.org or it's Akamai services for artwork and products that have not yet officially been released and post them as spoilers, sneak previews, here on JWTalk.

    2) Do NOT upload unaltered copyrighted content from JW.org AT ALL.

    3) Do NOT use image links to display myriads of pictures from JW.org

    4) Do NOT use an image UNLESS it is actually necessary to explain or fascilitate discussion.

    5) Do NOT treat JWTalk like Instagram or to "share" images or links with no clear indication what it is you want to discuss. We're a discussion forum, not Twitter or Facebook.

    6) Do NOT post links to YouTube or to file sharing services where others have not followed the clear direction from the Slave on distributing copyrighted content by a means other than JW.org or JW Library.

We work under Jehovah God’s theocratic system. We realise that the Governing Body has been assigned certain authority under the ruler ship of Jesus Christ, and they do not wish to outsource this responsibility. And also, please remember, that efficiency was never a part of the fruit age of the spirit. (Ga 5:22, 23) The brothers are more than willing to work with and produce material for people with disabilities. We have arrangements for the blind, deaf, people with low reading skills. And more will come, no doubt.

    1. reduce the costs of producing apps by embracing open innovation -- save on dedicated funds

    - WHQ was supposed to house 500 witnesses and a large portion of this was in the IT dept -- by the time it was built that number had doubled to approx 1000! (the latter number was given to us by our tour guide a couple years ago)

    2. produce more apps including ones that serve the needs of specific groups of witnesses, such as those with disabilities

    - the fact that legitimate apps continue to be produced by non-bethelites / non-A19 workers makes it obvious that our current tools, including JW Library, don't meet the needs for everyone. For example there could be apps for people with dyslexia or who have minority learning styles.

@jwhess after rewriting my essay like 3 times and losing it each time, perhaps it would be better if you told be why you think our apps don't have serious design flaws including lack of basic things like OpenDyslexic fonts? especially after 8 years

Actually, it seemed for many years that we were purposely refusing to digitize certain publications (perhaps to help keep 'control' of it against apostates) but that did not work (scanners are cheap to come by) and eventually we threw caution to wind and have gone so far as to release on the public part of our website publications such as the Organized book.

timpin reacted to Brandon in JW Library on Linux Mint
@jwhess If you think JW Library is a proprietary in-house creation then you'd be very surprised to open the "acknowledgements" section of JW Library settings where you'll see fifteen sources of code, probably most of which is open source!

actually no, you could open source the software without actually giving up control (neither technologically nor legally) of the content. You might be conflating DRM with closed source code. I'm not even sure that jwpub files contain any DRM.

as was mentioned numerous times in this thread, even with large attempts to control the distribution and reuse of our copyrighted material, our organization has not been able to stop opposers from impersonating us anyways (including copying and reusing our logos illegally, editing articles and sharing them, etc).

timpin reacted to jwhess in Report Submission Form
It certainly is permissible to have the FSG overseer do it or help collect the reports.  In the days when we went to the Kingdom Hall regularly, the box for dropping off the filled in time slips was at the Kingdom Hall.  We all took our slips to the hall.  As FSG overseers, we regularly reminded publishers at the meeting (before and after) to turn in their field service report slips.  I used to carry a couple of them in my hand before the meeting and  asked the publishers if they had remembered.

It was rare that a publisher would fill out a report, hold it until our Saturday morning field service meeting and then see me the following morning on Sunday and  watch for me to drop his slip in the box for him. Now, once the initial collection was done, we knew who had not reported.  then the FSG overseers who had these missing publishers in their group would go and try to get the report. Often this was a phone call.  The forgetful publisher wanted to send the missing report in right away.  Sometimes they would just tell me on the phone. But often, they would call the secretary, text the secretary, email the secretary and so on.  So to make that late report backup plan work easier on the secretary, we had this email sett up so anyone could send in the missing reports.

We had that set up long before there was a Pandemic.  It was only used by a small number of the congregation.  then it became more popular as the years went by and some became more tech savvy.  When the Pandemic forced everyone to send reports electronically, the system was already set up and working. So we all used it instead of just half of us.  The FSG overseers still get notices electronically about who has forgotten to report and we still track them down electronically (usually by phone or text).  The complete report is returned to the FSG overseers each month for review.

A side point is our rural location.  When we used to meet in person, I had members of my FSG who lived  25-30 miles and 2 counties away from our group meeting place.  He was at the Kingdom Hall two or three times  as often as he was at my home on Saturday. So a reminder at the Hall was easier.

timpin reacted to M.J. in Report Submission Form
Why does one secretary do all the collecting? It seems like a very heavy load. Every hall I've ever been, we have to report to our FSG overseer, and then they turn it in for their group. It just seems so much more practical. Isn't that the purpose of the FSG conductor? To divide the load. Besides, he has to check on his group anyway, so once a month when service is due, is killing two birds with one stone.

I deliberately refrain from stating my decisions on the vaccine because, like the GB said, ITS PERSONAL and no one's business.
And yes, I still maintain that nobody really knows what's best. It may be years before we truly understand it. But to keep oneself healthy we must avoid close contact as much as possible, protect and keep building our immune system and keep up on the use of sanitizers.
    Keep well friends.
