Micanopy, Florida US

 

Micanopy is a town in Alachua County, Florida, United States, located south of Gainesville. The population as of the 2010 census was 600. The town center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and contains a number of antique stores, as well as several restaurants.

 

In 1539 Spanish conquistador and explorer Hernando De Soto noted a Timucuan Indian village at the site of present-day Micanopy. Over two hundred years later, the American naturalist William Bartram recorded his impressions of a proto-Seminole village named Cuscowilla in this same locale.
By the time Spain ceded its Florida provinces to the U.S. in 1821, the newly constructed hamlet of Micanopy became the first distinct United States town in the Florida Territory.

Back in the late fifties and early sixties, when segregation was common, there was a small "Colored" Congregation in Micanopy (that was the term they used at that time). When integration came in, that was one of the first Congregations outside of the Gainesville area to start to build a new Hall. Back then, there was no "quick builds" and no RBC/LDC. The build took several years .... I know this for a fact, since I worked on that Hall back then.

 

More recently, it had a "major remodel" under the RBC. A couple years before the RBC changed to the LDC, I was asked to go there and evaluate their sound system - they had some real problems. The old building had an "end stage". When they had the remodel, the stage was moved to one corner - but that corner was slightly offset to the right to accommodate a wheelchair ramp. The thing is, when they did this, they failed to reposition the speakers for this design. They also had some really outdated sound equipment that was on it's "last legs". We brought in the new equipment and some additional speakers, rearranged the speakers (they have a "suspended" ceiling making it easier to move the speakers) and corrected their sound issues.

Quincy, Florida, US

 

Established in 1828, Quincy is the county seat of Gadsden County, and was named for John Quincy Adams. It is located 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Tallahassee, the state capital. Quincy was once heavily dependent upon agriculture, farming tomatoes, tobacco, mushrooms, soybeans and other crops for its employment base.

 

There is an English and a Spanish Congregation in Quincy. They both meet in the same Hall. The Hall is not in the "city proper" but is located just south of I10 at the Fl 267 exit while the actual city of Quincy is just north of I10 at the same exit. There is a Walmart Supercenter only a few minutes from the Hall.

 

The Quincy Hall just had a "major remodel" by the LDC. It was complete during the Regional Convention season in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. LDC volunteers from Florida, Georgia and Alabama were involved in the project. The Hall was basically taken down to the exterior walls and rebuilt.

 

Two weeks before my RC I was privileged to work on some of the final stages of the remodel - I installed carpet and sound.

 

We were fed by the LDC arrangement which means there was no food cooked or prepared on the site but was supplied by various Congregation from the area. This included Congregations from Georgia and Florida.

 

Some of those Congregations involved in the work and/or the food had already been to their RC while others had not. The nice part is that no one "spilled the beans" about the Convention so as not to spoil it for those who still needed to attend theirs.

The town grew slowly, and had become a minor shipping port for cattle and citrus by the time of the United States Civil War. Tampa Bay was blockaded by the United States Navy during the war, and Tampa fell into a long period of economic stagnation that continued long after the war ended.

 

The situation changed in the 1880s, when the first railroad links, the discovery of phosphate, and the arrival of the cigar industry jump-started its development, helping Tampa to grow from an isolated village with less than 800 residents in 1880 to a bustling city of over 30,000 by the early 1900s.

 

Today, Tampa is part of the metropolitan area most commonly referred to as the "Tampa Bay Area". The four-county area is composed of roughly 2.9 million residents, making it the second largest metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the state, and the fourth largest in the Southeastern United States, behind Miami, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. The Greater Tampa Bay area has over 4 million residents and generally includes the Tampa and Sarasota metro areas.

 

Tampa is home to 48 Congregations holding meetings in at least 10 languages. The Greater Tampa Bay Area is home to more than 91 Congregations.

 

Tampa is also one of the cities to hold Regional Conventions  each year with more than one language Convention scheduled.

 

During the Quick Build days of the 80's and into the RBC days, I was able to assist in building and remodeling several Kingdom Halls in the Greater Tampa Bay Area.

Yeehaw Junction, Florida, US

 

Yeehaw Junction is a census-designated place (CDP) in Osceola County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 240.

 

The location was named after the Yeehaw station on the Florida East Coast Railway, several miles to the east on SR 60 in Indian River County.

 

There are no KH's in Yeehaw Junction.

Bajor class M planet that has five moons. A day on Bajor has 26 hours. Bajor's atmosphere has a greenish tint; as a result, oceans viewed from space will appear more green than blue. 

Bajor is the seventh planet in the system that orbits the star Bajor-B'hava'el. It is the largest planet in the system and had five moons.

 

Bajor was occupied by the Cardassian Union. During this time, the Cardassians not only decimated the Bajoran population and destroyed large parts of its infrastructure, but also poisoned several areas of the planet in order to compromise the food supply after their withdrawal.

 

The Bajoran religion, also called The Way of the Prophets, is a major unifying force on the planet. Due to their religion being so intricately tied to their entire political, social and economic systems they never embraced the Truth - therefore, there have never been any KH's on Bajor.

Gideon has a naturally near-sterile environment whose inhabitants have remarkable self-regenerative abilities and thus are incredibly long-lived. However, under the rulership of the human government, the planet, when the Enterprise encountered it, was severely overpopulated and life was miserable.

 

This planet is a good example of just why the Kingdom is the only answer to a lasting future with beneficial living conditions. Even when mankind has what seems to be everlasting life, without following Jehovah's direction and having His Kingdom, long life alone does not result in true happiness.

 

There were no KH's on Gideon ..... there was no room to build them.
