The Mysterious Coronavirus Spreading Worldwide

Recommended Posts

Tying this discussion back to coronavirus, this is what I do for work. When all countries shut down for lockdown in March/April, and massive amounts of people lined up around the block (risking catching the virus in the days before social distancing was being enforced), it was truly heartbreaking to see people’s stunned faces. So many people out of a job. And many of them had never stepped a foot into a social security office. They felt gutted.

It broke my heart seeing this. And the government workers ploughed through the applications, overtime, bringing in all staff from each department and retraining them to process claims. Gifts were left outside our offices in gratitude. I’m glad that the government did give to the people at this time of need - Rom 13:4 “for it is God’s minister to you for your good.”

However, there will always be ones who abuse the system, and many are now having to repay debts.

UK needs tighter COVID rules to avert catastrophe: Epidemiologist

Britain’s government needs to bring in tighter coronavirus lockdown rules to avert a fresh wave of deaths from a new strain of the disease, a leading epidemiologist and government adviser warns.

Hayward, who sits on a British government advisory body on respiratory diseases, said the new strain of COVID that infected people more easily meant existing lockdown measures in England were unlikely to be enough to slow the spread of the disease.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The number of deaths in the Netherlands increased at the highest rate since World War Two this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Dutch national statistics office (CBS) said on Tuesday.

Up to last week, around 162,000 deaths were reported in the country of 17 million this year, 13,000 more than would have been expected in a regular year, the CBS said.

New Data Triples Russia’s Covid-19 Death Toll

The statistics agency said 230,000 more people died through November of this year than did in 2019, a hike attributable to the virus. Russia could jump to third among countries by number of Covid deaths.

Colorado confirms first known US case of new COVID-19 strain believed to be more contagious

"Today we discovered Colorado’s first case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, the same variant discovered in the U.K.," Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said on Twitter Tuesday afternoon. "The health and safety of Coloradans is our top priority and we will monitor this case, as well as all COVID-19 indicators, very closely."

The Colorado state laboratory confirmed the case and notified the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the governor's office said in a statement. The patient is a man in his 20s who is recovering in isolation. He has no travel history and no close contacts.

U.S. detects first case of COVID-19 variant as Biden offers gloomy vaccine outlook

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-usa/u-s-detects-first-case-of-covid-19-variant-as-biden-offers-gloomy-vaccine-outlook-idUSKBN2931EJ

WILMINGTON, Del./LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -The first known U.S. case of a highly infectious coronavirus variant was detected in Colorado on Tuesday as President-elect Joe Biden warned it could take years for most Americans to be vaccinated for the virus at current distribution rates.

Biden, a Democrat, said about 2 million people have been vaccinated, well short of the 20 million that outgoing Republican President Donald Trump had promised by the end of the year.

Biden’s goal of ensuring that 100 million vaccinations are administered by the end of his 100th day in office would mean “ramping up five to six times the current pace to 1 million shots a day,” Biden said, noting that it would require Congress to approve additional funding.

New "South African" variant, known as 501.V2.

ABC News - Australia

As coronavirus infections in South Africa continue to surge, Australia has detected its first case of a new, potentially fast-spreading variant linked to the country.

Queensland authorities yesterday announced a woman who had tested positive for COVID-19 in hotel quarantine was infected with the new "South African" variant, known as 501.V2.

So what is this new strain of the virus and just how worried should we be by its arrival in Australian quarantine?

Here's what we know so far.

Catch up on the main COVID-19 news from December 30 with our coronavirus blog.

Where has this new variant come from?

The new variant of coronavirus is believed to have originated in South Africa and was first discovered there in mid-December.

It is different from the strain recently detected in the United Kingdom, known as B117.

What was disturbing to hear this morning was that the 2 young sisters who work in a care home have caught the virus from a resident

DESPITE wearing all the appropriate PPE.....

Oh no! That’s awful, sorry to hear that. I hope they’ll be ok. That’s the thing with this virus, even though many are taking all the precautions necessary they’re still catching it!
To be honest here in the UK they’re saying the NHS is struggling badly, and just now on the news they’re really concerned about the rising numbers testing positive right here where I live in Essex! 😱

And even if one recovers a study shows 1 in 11 who went to the the hospital have to go back at least once if not several times. So much for this just being the flu and over with in a few weeks.

The two young sisters are recovering at home from the virus the whole family have it now too. The care home became infected with Coronavirus from a resident who had been in an NHS hospital and had been sent back to the home without being tested...she was positive and passed it on to a number of residents and staff even though social distancing and PPE was strictly adhered to...

Like Essex here in Cumbria we've gone from Tier 2 now going into Tier 4 due to infection rates!

A total of 27 staff and patients connected with ward one at Glenrothes Hospital have tested positive for coronavirus so far, but this number is expected to increase.

NHS Fife has confirmed there have been deaths linked to the cluster, but due to confidentiality, would only confirm the number is fewer than five.

Why we continue to follow the FDS, to stay United!

Rural Pastors Tend to Flocks Divided and Isolated by Covid-19

In Montana, a Lutheran church tries to stay together, despite spotty internet, long distances and fights over face masks

RONAN, Mont.—When the Rev. Seth Nelson reopened Faith Lutheran Church in this rural highway town this spring, he put strict social distancing rules in place: every other pew roped off; no coffee and cookies after service; and, most controversially, masks required.

The months since then have been the hardest of his six-year career in ministry.

“Every week, for months, somebody would be telling me I was wrong for taking this seriously,” said Mr. Nelson, 35 years old. “It’s caused a lot of tension and friction for me, personally and professionally.”

Ten months into the coronavirus pandemic, rural pastors are struggling to balance their flocks’ spiritual needs with their physical safety.

"We are never going to go back to normal," she said. She being the Chief Medical Officer of NSW Health.

“We might get a little bit more normalcy once we have all the population vaccinated, but COVID potentially will change our lives at all times and it may be something like the flu where we have to learn how to manage it in - with the tool of having a vaccine.”
