A strong earthquake centered near the resort of Huatulco shook parts of southern and central Mexico on Tuesday, killing at least one person and injuring another in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake that hit at 10:29 a.m. local time had a magnitude of 7.4 and was centered along the Pacific coast of Oaxaca state.

Alejandro Murat, governor of the Mexican state of Oaxaca, toldTelemundo News on a live interview that some buildings collapsed in the area of Crucecita, killing at least one person and injuring another.

"Unfortunately, someone lost their life after a building collapsed," said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in a video posted on social media.

Murat said at least one hospital in his state dedicated to the care of COVID-19 patients suffered so much structural damage that it will need to be completely evacuated.

"We will continue to call on people to act with precaution due to possible aftershocks. Let's take care of ourselves without anguish or despair," said López Obrador in Spanish.

As of early afternoon, at least 147 aftershocks have been reported, said López Obrador.

So was it a 5.8 or 6.1?

Guess it depends on who you get your reports from.

Volcanoes and earthquakes reported a 6.1 and USGS reported a 5.8. :D

Guess you just split the difference and make it a 6.0 something...give or take something. :D

Second 5.0 + quake there today.  There was another one in that area this morning

and it was only three miles down.

One year ago today there was a big earthquake in Southern Calif. It happened during the loud annual parade going past our house. This year no parade but there were some motorcycles and flag decorated cars doing their own thing taking the same route. Must be kinda anticlimactic for them once they did a loop around. Especially since there were so few people outside. Makes me wonder if last year was the last parade. Hope so.

Lots of deep earthquake activity today, including two 6.0+

Plus 34 mid range to upper 4.0 quakes.

Large deep quakes lead to even larger quakes.🤤
