Buffalo buffalo buffalo

Recommended Posts

The following sentence is grammatically correct in English (although admittedly not very useful):

"Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo."

The word "buffalo" has three possible meanings:

- A city in New York State.

- An American bison (plural also "buffalo", although "buffalos" or "bufaloes" are more common).

- The verb "to buffalo" meaning "to bully".

Since it's accepted usage to omit the subordinating particle "that", the sentence above can be understood as:

Buffalo buffalo (bisons from Buffalo NY) [that] Buffalo buffalo buffalo (that the bisons from Buffalo NY bully) buffalo Buffalo buffalo (are bullying bisons from Buffalo NY).

Very nice.

How about his, too ....

"Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo, buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo!"

With the addition of a comma, (just after the fourth buffalo) there does not need to be the "accepted usage to omit the subordinating particle 'that'" - however, it changes meaning of the sentence slightly.

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo (bisons from Buffalo NY), (the comma) buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo! (the comment repeated for emphasis)

In this version, the first buffalo is capitalized because it is the first word of the sentence, the third and seventh ones are capitalized because they refer to a "proper noun", the city of Buffalo.

The comma was added to separate the two duplicate expressions and the period was changed to an exclamation mark to enhance the idea of emphasis.

"Let all things take place decently and by arrangement."

If I can store stores in a store then a buffalo can buffalo a buffalo in buffalo as long as he doesn't get fired up for getting fired for causing a fire.

The tune to Lone Ranger and the William Tell overture can be represented thusly: Da da da da da da da da da da da . (you know you are humming it now.)- and not to be confused by the number of nas that introduce the Batman theme: Na na na na na na na na  _ _ _ _ _ _.  OT, but did you think Adam West's name was less chalk board-screeching than North West and Saint West?

Did you hear about the Jew and the American Indian that started a business together?

They couldn't decide to call it "The Jew and the Sew" or "The Sioux and the Jioux"

Was there an artistic representation of the fish and the chips? I find spaces in artwork too unbusy.
