Oh dear. All the good things are bad. :)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-34615621

Processed meats - such as bacon and ham - do cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization.

Meanwhile, it said red meats were "probably carcinogenic".

Could this be the end of meat eating in the new world? ;)

Covering my back by making sure it is clear that I AM JOKING when mentioning the new world and meat...

I have a regular practice of "cleansing my body" when I wake up due to our western diet. (Although I do not consume a lot of processed meats)

I drink 2 glasses of warm water with lemon every morning - at least 30 min before breakfast.

My thoughts are next week will be a report that states the total opposite. In fact some guy was on the news right now poo pooing, ahem, the report and saying there was absolutely no evidence that this was true.

He must know what he is saying being on the meat producers panel in the UK.

I thought we already had a thread that established eating lots of bacon leads to longevity?

You just have to read the entire article is all. Hopefully, it is obvious to all, that eating anyting in HUGE amounts is going to cuase problems. Obesity is HUGE (pun intended) factor in premature deaths according to WHO - http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs311/en/

But if you look at the rest of the article, you'll see there is little evidence that eating red meat causes harm. And as for bacon - all things in moderation

Little harm

Prof Tim Key, from the Cancer Research UK and the University of Oxford, said: "This decision doesn't mean you need to stop eating any red and processed meat, but if you eat lots of it you may want to think about cutting down.

"Eating a bacon bap every once in a while isn't going to do much harm - having a healthy diet is all about moderation."

The industry body the Meat Advisory Panel said "avoiding red meat in the diet is not a protective strategy against cancer" and said the focus should be alcohol, smoking and body weight.

A slice and a half each day is too much they say. That's not a lot. That gives an increase of 18% for colon cancer. Apparently.

The biggest arguments here in the UK are they have listed  them in the same category as smoking and asbestos.

Water may not cause cancer but it can kill people too, should I avoid water?

I read about a nice lady that would TOTALLY disagree with this:

Not many people will say that eating bacon every day is the key to a long life, but the world’s oldest woman swears by it.

I say - proof is in the eating!!   :chef:

All pretty unimportant.

Yep, It reminds me of non existent comment/ line from famous show about nothing !

Scenarios - sitting in the coffee shop

Seinfeld ... Well George apparently bacon causes cancer !

George to the waitress ... Can I have burger with double bacon please !

Seinfeld .. Same please ..

And that was the shortest acknowledgment of " bacon cancer" ever !

LOL

The Guinness Book of World Records had listed Shigechiyo Izumi of Japan as the world’s oldest man. At age 119, he was reported to be in “blooming health.” He died at the age of 120, during an unusually cold spell this February, after being laid up with a lingering cold for about 80 days. He had become a tourist attraction and entertained thousands of visitors each year. Until shortly before his death, he enjoyed all types of food, which he chewed 20 to 30 times before swallowing, and he also took daily walks in his garden.

I suppose he consumed bacon as well LOL

One of the arguments against the WHO's report was that if you go back to when tv's first came on the scene, hardly any hedgehogs died on roads but as tv's have become more popular, more and more hedgehogs have died on roads. So the obvius result is TV's kill hedgehogs. :)

The real story of course is that tv's and cars have grown in popularity at pretty much the same rate and its cars on roads that kill hedgehogs.

So you can decide on the result depending on what your motive is at times.

There's bacon, and there's bacon.  Some are pumped up with preservatives etc etc, some are more naturally preserved through smoking etc.  I'm thinking of those yummy sausages I remember hanging up in my relative's garage, filled to the brim with heady herbs and spices, and preserved naturally.  Surely, like anything else in this system's food chain, they have made something quite natural into a chemically preservative added unnatural food substance?

Eat, drink, in moderation, and as natural as you can.  Food is not the enemy, just human agribusiness/greed preparation and distributions systems are :)

“What's the causal link? The researchers believe the salt and chemicals used in the preserving of such meat products may be causing the health problems.

Several brands of Bacon, Sausages, and Hot Dogs do not contain nitrites, nitrates, salt or shelf-life additives.

Then again, the more TV and internet people consume, the more sidetracked they will become and the shorter their attention span, leading to impaired perception on the road which means they miss the little fellas when they are crossing it.

Makes sense!

Then again, if that were the case, I'd be the biggest roadkill record-holder. I've only killed a single little bird though, despite having driven around the equator roughly three times in my life.

"The China Study" talked about animal protein and it being able to begin the cancer process at 20% of diet.  Then they could reverse the cancer by going down to 5% of diet.  This book was not a vegan doctrine book but was just proving what the science said.  So if any want a bench mark to shoot for --- 5%.

I can't believe that on our news they stated it was just as harmful as cigarettes...are you serious people???

If this is so, won't we need to stop eating it according to scriptures like cigarettes? It's awful news...

News...opinions...reports...studies...

We do need to keep things in perspective and have a balanced view of the information we receive.

Breathing causes cancer but I don't think the scriptures tell me to stop breathing...

Believe me...I am keeping it in mind but I don't want this to be true!!! What will I season my beans with??? How will I make a BLT??? What will I wrap my filet mignon with? What about breakfast? What about loaded baked potatoes with a little bacon on top...oh, it's gonna ruin everything delicious I hope they have another report next week that says the opposite!

9. Processed meat was classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). Tobacco smoking and asbestos are also both classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). Does it mean that consumption of processed meat is as carcinogenic as tobacco smoking and asbestos?

No, processed meat has been classified in the same category as causes of cancer such as tobacco smoking and asbestos (IARC Group 1, carcinogenic to humans), but this does NOT mean that they are all equally dangerous. The IARC classifications describe the strength of the scientific evidence about an agent being a cause of cancer, rather than assessing the level of risk.

http://monographs.iarc.fr/ENG/Classification/latest_classif.php

Alcoholic beverages, outdoor air pollution, and salted fish - are also on the list.

If being on the list means you will not partake of them anymore - be careful breathing   :lol1:
