The Mysterious Coronavirus Spreading Worldwide

In healthcare we are expecting a fall and winter surge in cases. But we also expect these will be difficult to untangle from cases of influenza and similar seasonal respiratory infections. The only hope I hold that this won’t be the case is IF PEOPLE will just wear masks and social distance and wash their hands.  If those things are done then Influenza cases should actually be considerably lower.

Well, we have a flu season in the winter because people spend more time indoors spreading it. We don't have one in the summer because most people are outdoors.

If families are spending more time at home together, they do not wear mask and social distancing isn't possible. So just like COVID, outbreaks in Korea and New York were among family members living together, and people living in the same building.

So what will calm the flu season, in my opinion, is if people don't gather at all during the winter with members outside their households. Or if we can find ways to be outdoors as much as reasonably possible during the winter.

In Singapore, we have a SafeEntry website where we log in and log out whenever we enter/leave a business establishment. Each establishment has a QR code which links to the TraceEntry website.

I was in one food establishment (Vivocity KopiTiam) 13 days ago and received this message today from TraceEntry. MOH is the ministry of health wihich administers the TraceEntry website. I guess wearing a mask and safe distancing has helped prevent our being infected as the 5 of us who were there together have not had any covid-19 symptoms yet.

Our flu season was negligible. All the social distancing and hand washing did the trick. Most of Australia haven’t got community spread of coronavirus, so masks are optional and only needed in certain circumstances.  So here’s hoping it turns out well for USA too. Just keep social distancing and keep up the hygiene as best as you can.

Just wanted to add, Japan also reported low influenza last northern winter. They always wear masks anyway in winter to avoid the spread of colds and viruses. But they also were at the very beginning of handling the first coronavirus cases after China. They were practising social distancing and were even more scrupulous with hand washing. So obviously, even in a crowded country, it can be better managed in winter.

Well, Australia has a population of about 26 million. The US is about 350 million. Easier to "social distance" compared to us. California, has almost twice the population of Australia. That's just one State here out of 48.

Regardless of Australia's size and population, they always have a flu season.  If this year's flu season was milder than previous years, then there must be a reason.

What's the reason? Its a TON easier to social distance and avoid the flu of if I have a 30k sq ft house of 5 than if I have a 30k ft house of 40.

Californian's now have good reason to wear masks. Yesterday, I saw the NBC news headline saying 'Like a scene from Mars', Skies in California turn orange as wildfires rage.

Surely this must make the air very polluted. When we had forest fire smoke from Indonesia blowing across Singapore we had to wear masks when going outdoors as the particulate count (PSI) was high.

The local people in heavily polluted cities like Ho Chi Minh and other Indonesian cities, have always worn masks. So with this pandemic, it seems like 2nd nature for them to put on masks on account of the virus.

I kinda got used to having on my mask nowadays that I feel like I'm going to carry on this practise even after the pandemic is over. Once I was in Kalibo, Aklan in the Philippines and didn't follow the natives in wearing masks. I came home with a nasty cough and my nasal cavity was always fill with dust when I was holidaying there.

Scientists have discovered that daydreaming is an important tool for creativity. It causes a rush of activity in a circuit, which connects different parts of the brain and allows the mind to make new associations.

I also mentioned Japan. Population also recorded lower flu in the past winter month. The authorities recognised it was due to covid awareness and frequent handwashing. And they practiced social distancing the best they could. They also have very tiny homes and congested cities.

Just wanted to highlight it has been recognised that measures brought in because of covid HAVE worked in curbing the flu. So that’s one good thing.

A lot of people I know got the virus in the past months, but none in my congregation or circle of friends. They were neighbors, a relative of a workmate, someone who works where I do my shopping... But suddenly in the last few days a number of my friends and brothers in my congregation have tested positive. Fortunately all of them are asymptomatic or with mild symptoms. In most cases they were routine tested just because they had been in contact with someone who tested positive.

Not sure if the virus is spreading more quickly or if a similar number of them already passed it but, not having been tested and being asymptomatic, they never knew they had it.

Something true is that, despite the number of infections being similarly high, the number of people killed by the virus is much much lower than in the first months of the pandemic. In April and May we were having 1000 covid19-related deaths daily in Spain. Now we are having 25-30.

Proportionately, it is the elderly that have the higher death rates. Now that we have awareness of what to do to minimise spread, we are protecting our elderly better. By that I mean, we don’t hug and kiss our grandma like the Italians did when it first hit in Italy. The older ones now tend to go out less, have home deliveries more, and are more careful with social distancing.  They nearly always wear masks when out.

Ive read that this has contributed to lower deaths despite higher numbers of cases. The number of deaths spike exponentially if COVID hits nursing homes, where there is a very high percentage of deaths in residents.

Of course, young ones can fight off the virus better, and can live with the milder symptoms.  So that doesn’t stop them circulating and spreading the virus.

I hope it comes negative, Jenny. Or if it comes positive, that you recover quickly. It's so sad to hear of all those brothers and sisters who died.

This is a very good point, Lucy. The virus has been terrible here at nursing homes. When we were having one thousand deaths daily, most of them were elderly people. So in a way, those who were more vulnerable to the virus either have died already or survived and are now immunized or are better protected now. It's mostly young people that catch it now, and that may explain why so few die of it.

Context is everything...

We are trying hard to stay positive in a negative world and still be negative in a positive world..

Muchos gracias brother. Si! It is negative but family of witnesses in Manila were positive this weekend.. The family in law of a sister died of covid.. I thinks she/he's  betweeen 45-50.. They're fat... It depends on the immunity too so we should be taking care of ourselves not to be obese but be healthy.   A famous filipino vlogger who's name is lloyd cadena, hes still young but too fat, died of covid..

I never thought I would see a time when negativity was lauded. That alone convinces me we are near the end.

Dakotas lead US in virus growth as both reject mask rules

North Dakota and South Dakota lead the country in new cases per capita over the last two weeks.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Coronavirus infections in the Dakotas are growing faster than anywhere else in the nation, fueling impassioned debates over masks and personal freedom after months in which the two states avoided the worst of the pandemic.

The argument over masks raged this week in Brookings, South Dakota, as the city council considered requiring face coverings in businesses. The city was forced to move its meeting to a local arena to accommodate intense interest, with many citizens speaking against it, before the mask requirement ultimately passed.
