Your Avatar - Real picture or not?

Recommended Posts

One member here raised an interesting question, about shying away from displaying real picture as avatar on the forum.

Perhaps we can discuss this topic here.

What is stopping you from displaying your real picture even for a while?

What is the benefit of having real picture as a avatar? (or drawback)

Would you display your real picture even for a week, so we can get to know your better?

Personally, I display my picture, I want everyone to see the real me, but that is just the way I feel, many others may feel differently, and everyone has the right do display, their own picture of what they want. One thing is for sure doesn't matter what we do we love each and everyone of you.

I have nothing against those on the forum knowing what I look like - I give regular invitations to my Zoom Chat where I have my camera on. All on JWT are invited and welcome to join.

I will also be clearly visible on the upcoming collaborative reading of PS 34 since it is a "video reading" using Zoom.

I just don't have a very good picture to use as an avatar

This.

I participate in any communication in order to be known and know others better. A first step is putting my face out there. I use my real name, too. I don't like hiding.

I'll play - here is a real pic of me off Zoom - just like you will see me if you join one of the chats

I'd have no problem showing my face in video in a small group. I'd prefer it in fact. But a large group frightens me a bit. Maybe it is social anxiety, maybe it is snobbery, IDK. I keep my video off during meetings for the most part, but it is a large group... during service I keep the video on because i know everyone and feel comfortable. Maybe when I feel comfortable with everyone on the forum I'll switch to a real picture. (I know that's probably impossible as people come and go to forums).

I'm also kind of "old school" internet... where your avatar was something that represented you, oftentimes better than you felt a picture could represent you. Old school internet it didn't matter what you looked like, it was more about who you were..

No. That is not really a picture of me. In fact, it's not a secret that I don't even use my real first name on here. (That fact is written in my profile.)

As for the avatar, I did try using this one a few years ago…

…but it only lasted a couple of days. A sister on the forums complained about it, saying she preferred the sheep. Well, that sister used her pet poodle as an avatar in those days. And I just thought I was a sucker for a cute puppy.
