Thousands Attend Memorial Service for Victims of the Hamburg Shooting

10 April 2023, JW.org

Jehovah’s Witnesses and others around the world were deeply affected by the mass shooting at a Kingdom Hall in Hamburg, Germany, on March 9, 2023. Brother Mark Sanderson, a member of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses; Brother Gajus Glockentin, a helper to the Publishing Committee; and members of the Central Europe Branch Committee traveled to Hamburg to comfort and shepherd our brothers and sisters. On March 25, a memorial service for the victims was held in a sports arena in the city. Those who viewed the touching program saw it as a display of the Bible’s power to comfort and support those who mourn. Many felt as one brother who survived the attack expressed: “We really felt embraced by Jehovah today.”

Dirk Ciupek with the Branch Committee said "Death does not have to speak the last word. The last word is spoken by God."      * Resurrection *

"OUR DEAD WILL REMAIN PART OF US"

Hamburg Morgenpost, Monday 27 March 2023

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Thousands of Jehovah's Witnesses say goodbye after rampage

Thousands of members of Jehovah's Witnesses have remembered the victims of the rampage that left eight dead in Hamburg in a moving ceremony. About 3,300 believers gathered for the funeral service in a sports hall on Saturday, and another 90,000 followed the ceremony via the internet, according to the organisers.

In addition to relatives of the bereaved and the surviving victims, representatives from more than 50 Hamburg congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses as well as representatives from politics and the authorities attended the funeral service - among them Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD), the Second Mayor, the President of the Hamburg Parliament and the top management of the Hamburg police.

"We are speechless in the face of the level of violence and brutality," said Dirk Ciupek from the Central Europe branch of Jehovah's Witnesses in his memorial address. The community feels indebted to the police, who prevented further victims on the night of the crime without hesitation and at the risk of their lives. Thanks were also due to the fire brigade, the rescue services and the faith community, the rescue services and the religious brother who had the presence of mind to turn off the light in the hall during the attack - "and thus saved lives, but not his own".

“We are speechless

in view of the extent of

violence and brutality”

Dirk Ciupek, Jehovah's Witnesses

Ciupek emphasised: "It will be a different life than before, it will be a life with a void, a void that hurts." In his speech, he described the characteristics and peculiarities of each victim, such as the unborn girl the congregation had been looking forward to. "Yes, we miss our dead, we mourn our dead. They will remain part of us," Ciupek said.

Mayor Peter Tschentscher emphasised: "We have never experienced such a crime in Hamburg before." The President of the Hamburg Parliament, Carola Veit, sent her condolences on behalf of the Hamburg Parliament.

From the youtube video I seen, before it was reportedly taken down, he spoke in English and his words were translated to German.

"there was Jehovah’s word for him, and it went on to say to him: “What is your business here, E·lijah?" To this (Elijah) he said: “I have been absolutely jealous for Jehovah the God of armies"- 1 Kings 19:9, 10 Reference Bible

Do you know if Br. Sanderson spoke in German or if there was a translator?

I still have the original video, and the brother did speak in English and it was translated.

Wow.  So the officer, and the “gun club” had been notified in JANUARY that the shooter was MENTALLY ILL, was becoming INCREASINGLY AGGRESSIVE, and was DANGEROUS, but they FAILED to document or follow up. And the officer had close ties to the gun club where the shooter “took his shooting test” before purchasing the murder weapon.

So a “good old boys club” where the cop protected the shooter. Wow.

Be careful. The 'cop' had no idea that his actions would result in such a disaster. Perhaps within the club, he may have appeared normal, as mentally ill people have a knack of hiding their state of mind when needed.

It was poor judgment on his part, for sure, but there might be a lot of finger pointing to blame somebody. There were a series of mishaps that could have prevented the shooter from taking action, not just one.

Alright, fair, I don’t know all the facts. My sense of justice gets irritated by the failures of this imperfect human system of things, especially when such a horrific tragedy against our brothers could’ve been prevented

Oh wow!  That's such a moving and emotional piece.  We can't help but feel very sad, and very proud of our brave brothers and sisters.  How Jehovah, through the organisation and brotherhood has kept them sane.  It's very obvious that even with this level of trauma, he never abandons those who love him.  We thank Jehovah from the bottom of our hearts for our hope.

Thank you Fae for posting this! 💖

Thanks for the article Sis. Fae.

It's a tough read but encouraging.
