Vegan and vegetarian brothers and sisters

I don't remember having posted in this thread yet. My wife has been a vegan for ethical reasons for 17 years now, but I am a regular meat-eater, or as them 🌱 people say, an omnivore. When we started courting 2013/2014, I found this a bit scary as the picture I had of vegans was the kind of picture militant vegans like to convey.

We live in an area where veganism is a big thing, and hipster restaurants with vegan courses have contributed to gentrification in the local neighborhoods. I can't understand, though, how vegan food at restaurants and various popups can be so expensive considering that most of the ingredients should be cheaper to purchase. Whenever we get to visit my country of birth (usually summers, but obviously couldn't go this year because of Covid-19...), she loves to go to the grocery stores as it is easy to find fake meat and other vegan-friendly products.

I doubt I will ever go vegan or even vegetarian (on this side of the system of things anyway), I guess I just love my 🍔 and 🧀 too much. I can tolerate Beyond and Impossible fake meats, but they are not my favourites any means.

It is good to know that even on JWTalk there are several vegetarian/vegan members as on a congregation level this is something that is  not often discussed. At least where we are people seem to think that vegans only eat lettuce or bean sprouts. Some brothers think they are funny making fun of living as a vegan. No wonder my wife (she hasn't been on JWTalk for years) feels she can't really talk with other Witnesses about vegan stuff any more, which I think is sad considering it is her special area of interest. I guess because of her staunch vegan stand, I have become more tolerant of different views and ideas and don't mind trying to eat new things. When she cooks vegan dishes at home I am more than happy to eat them (I am definitely not a good cook), but after a few days I am sadly missing the juicy 🥩.

</PERSONALRANT>

I don't know which stores are country-wide in the US, but in these parts we find cheaper than usual products suitable for vegans from Grocery Outlet. Whole Foods is nice, but right now totally out of my price range as I've been unemployed since March. I feel like Trader Joe's has got some good stuff, but even they are too expensive. As for restaurants, my wife likes the breakfast at Plant Power, although we both seem to agree that rest of their menu is pretty mediocre. Or we might pick up food from Asian/Vietnamese fast food restaurants that have plenty of options that can be made vegan.

Wifey made excellent curry using a package bought from a Japanese market, boiled Jasmine rice, and minced some Beyond burgers in the whole thing :chef: I was doubtful to say the least, but man it was good :eat: I know, I know, "pictures or it didn't happen", right 😉

I’ve been wfpb since the last week of June. My guys were already used to me cooking mostly veggie/bean based meals.  I’ve cooked them some meat a couple of times and they still eat pizza etc.

I like to batch cook.  I cook up a bunch of potatoes or an enormous soup and eat off that for a couple of days. Adding in salads and other veggies.
I haven’t been perfect at it yet (still have a beer or cocktail here and there) but blood sugar is way more stable. I don’t have diabetes but my family history is strong with it.

Well you can drive by a house where they are grilling. Whether that’s a meat burger or a veggie burger on there remains to be seen 😜

Went to a soul food vegan restaurant yesterday and had a cheesy chicken sandwich, loaded/topped fries with vegan, cheese, meat and avocado sauce as well as a piece of chocolate cake. I forgot to take a picture of the cake…

Here’s two other meals I had at the same restaurant. Country fried chicken diner with gravy, mashed potatoes, yams and Mac n’ cheese. The other plate is Salisbury steak with yams and Mac n’ cheese 😋
