The Mysterious Coronavirus Spreading Worldwide

As far as I know only coronavirus awakes dormant viruses

i never studied flu related to herpes

but it can happen

if you have a viral infection your immune system is shaken

so I believe it’s possible to have a herpes infection while having a flu infection

She may have caught two different variants of sars and her immune system doesn’t develop enough memory to prevent it from happening again

Looking healthy doesn’t mean she has the perfect imune system

that depends a lot on your genetics 😉

I read an interesting article which explained the role genetics play in your immune system being able to fight this effectively or not.
http://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210219-the-covid-resistant-patients-e-the-viruss-weak-spots

Over the coming months, Bobe hopes to sequence the genomes of people who display signs of resilience to Covid-19, to see whether there are any common mutations that appear to help them evade the virus. If so, this may provide inspiration for antivirals which can protect against both Covid-19, and also future coronavirus outbreaks.

Rockefeller scientists have probed the human genome for clues as to why some people become unexpectedly and severely ill when infected by common viruses ranging from herpes to influenza. "In every infectious disease we've looked at, you can always find outliers who become severely ill, because they have genetic mutations which make them susceptible," says Zhang.

But sometimes genetic flaws mean that this system malfunctions. In 2015, Rockefeller scientists identified mutations in young, otherwise healthy people which led to them developing severe pneumonia from influenza. The mutations meant that the interferon response was non-existent. "If the alarm is silenced, then the virus can spread and proliferate much faster within the body," says Zhang.

(genetic mutations will be a thing of the past soon. Our immune systems are wonderfully made, and even in imperfection they are amazing. But we can’t help our genetics).

Good news from the UK, regular testing for children (and teachers)  are being introduced. Home tests (twice a week) for teens.

Mask wearing all day for all children over infant level is in the pipeline, but not yet implemented as it here in France.

Once everyone has had the vaccines we can hopefully settle down to just mask wearing only in public and only regional lockdowns as the new strains appear.  The suggestion is we will have to have two series vaccines a year (like the flu jab)  so the autumn vaccines will need to be developed.

The government has also said people may possibly be allowed to travel abroad.  Maybe. ( l suppose  on the condition they have a CODIV passport of course)  No timeline yet for the rollout of the these.

Woman who died after transplant surgery at U-M got COVID-19 from donated lungs

A woman who died after undergoing a double lung transplant at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor is the first known person to contract COVID-19 from donor lungs, according to a new case report published in the American Journal of Transplantation.

"To my knowledge, this is the first, and actually the only, documented transmission of COVID-19 to a recipient" from donated organs, said Bruce Nicely, chief clinical officer of Gift of Life Michigan, the state's federally designated organ and tissue recovery program.

Fully vaccinated people can gather individually with minimal risk, Fauci says

Two fully vaccinated people can gather individually with minimal risk, Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN’s Chris Cuomo Thursday.

"You can start getting together as individual people, even though the risk is not zero, the risk becomes extremely low when you have both parties vaccinated," said Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not released guidelines about gathering with other vaccinated people.

“My professional judgement is that when my daughter wants to come in here and she is doubly vaccinated, I’m going to have her over to the house, and I’m going to give her a big hug that I haven’t been able to do for a year,” Fauci said.

I don't understand how this is possible. Are they saying she died from COVID?

three days after the transplant operation, the recipient showed concerning symptoms. She had a fever, she experienced breathing difficulties, and her blood pressure fell. Hospital imaging revealed signs of a lung infection, and when her condition got worse (she developed septic shock and heart function problems), doctors tested her for SARS-CoV-2. The samples from her new lungs came back positive, which led doctors back to samples from the transplant donor. Tests showed that a swab from the donor's nose and throat retrieved 48 hours after her lungs her procured were negative, and her family confirmed that she had no history of recent travel or known exposure to anybody with the disease. Nor was she displaying any COVID-19 symptoms.

I would say yes!

All our recent progress with Covid-19 could be wiped out by variants, CDC director says. 'Please stay strong'

The US is at risk of losing all its recent gains in the battle against Covid-19 as highly contagious variants take advantage of Americans getting lax with safety measures.

"Please hear me clearly: At this level of cases with variants spreading, we stand to completely lose the hard-earned ground we have gained," said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

After weeks of tumbling case numbers, new infections are on the rise again -- about 2% more this past week compared to the previous week, Walensky said Monday.

More than 2,750 cases of coronavirus variants reported in the US

The United States has reported at least 2,753 cases of the coronavirus variants first spotted in the UK, South Africa and Brazil, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Genomic sequencing has turned up cases of the three top variants of concern in 47 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico.

The CDC says this does not represent the total number of such cases circulating in the US -- just those detected by analyzing positive samples.

UK variant: The vast majority of these cases -- 2,672 -- are the more contagious variant known as B.1.1.7, which was originally detected in the UK. This variant has been found in 46 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, DC. About 24% of cases are in Florida.

South Africa variant: There have been 68 cases of a variant first seen in South Africa, called B.1.351, in 16 states and Washington, DC.

Brazil variant: 13 total cases of the P.1 variant first linked to Brazil have been discovered in 7 states.

More interesting developments reported in NY Times:

By Apoorva Mandavilli

Scientists in Oregon have spotted a homegrown version of a fast-spreading variant of the coronavirus that first surfaced in Britain — but now combined with a mutation that may make the variant less susceptible to vaccines.

The researchers have so far found just a single case of this formidable combination, but genetic analysis suggested that the variant had been acquired in the community and did not arise in the patient.

“We didn’t import this from elsewhere in the world — it occurred spontaneously,” said Brian O’Roak, a geneticist at Oregon Health and Science University who led the work. He and his colleagues participate in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s effort to track variants, and they have deposited their results in databases shared by scientists.

The variant originally identified in Britain, called B.1.1.7, has been spreading rapidly across the United States, and accounts for at least 2,500 cases in 46 states. This form of the virus is both more contagious, and more deadly, than the original version, and is expected to account for most infections in America in a few weeks.

US is at a tipping point of another Covid-19 surge, expert says. That's why safety measures remain crucial now

With each day and each vaccination, the US inches closer to the finish line of what has been a brutal battle against Covid-19.

More than 2,700 cases of variants first spotted in the UK, South Africa and Brazil have been reported in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- but the agency has cautioned that's not the total number of cases in the country, but rather those that have been spotted with the help of genomic sequencing.

The vast majority of these cases -- at least 2,672 -- are the more contagious variant known as B.1.1.7, first spotted in the UK. The variant has been found in 46 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, DC.

"That strain is increasing exponentially, it's spiking up," infectious diseases specialist and epidemiologist Dr. Celine Gounder told CNN Saturday. "So we are probably right now on a tipping point of another surge."
