Thank you. That's a good article to start off with.  I wonder how the Johnson & Johnson vaccine compares

Edit: the confusion of the many "experts" is not helping.  Now another "expert" is saying: "The modelling by the experienced Doherty team (which the Australian govt is following), and the calculations presented by Hyde and colleagues today, use very different methods and make very different assumptions. The Doherty example formally models both viral transmission in the Australian population, likelihoods of disease and health systems capacities."  😩

Only Jehovah is very clear on the path out.

Meh @ modeling.

Models are dangerously flawed because they are based entirely on assumptions and when those assumptions don’t pan out, credibility is blown. Humans often fail at predicting the future, and do so pretty spectacularly given the original model of 2 million US deaths in March 2020.

Australia, if they haven’t done so already, should admit they’re pursuing a “zero risk” covid standard.

It’s obvious that they believe zero risk is realistic given the measures they’ve taken.

Its interesting how much man and science can know, yet how little they know too.

They have the whole genome sequence of covid mapped out, but can't properly make predictive models. Though a pandemic of this scale hasn't happened for a hundred years.

No need to admit it. We still have that in most states. Still no covid here except NSW (Sydney) the capital of Aust (Canberra where the leaders are) and Victoria (Melbourne). We do lockdown to bring community spread to zero, then borders between states will reopen.

This time Delta spread too fast though and  people are hopeless at sticking to rules, really stupid law breakers (you heard about the two nude men on the beach with the deer? Look it up 🤣). So the affected states can’t get to zero anymore so vaccinations are being madly organised. No vaccine hesitancy here either, just a slow botched rollout by the govt.

BTW, modelling is necessary for decision-making. What my post alluded to was the modelling is probably out dated due to now realising the youth under 20, who are at most risk, we’re not included in the figures. In other words, stubbornness of Satan’s world to admit mistakes and do better.

My sister e-mailed me from Indiana, she said the Gamma strain is on the rise.

Where in Indiana is she? I'm originally from south of Indianapolis

Yeah, and like most, I believed in models at the very beginning of the pandemic. I don’t fault the scientists for being wrong.

With a new virus, being wrong is guaranteed.

But to keep being wrong and keep modeling and keep being wrong was what I didn’t appreciate.

Well, Michigan is certainly increasing in confirmed cases. For both Upper & Lower Michigan from Tuesday and Wednesday the numbers jumped 4,300 cases. 😳

For just the Upper Peninsula it went up 132 cases, with 1 death. Ross’ and my county, (Alger) jumped up 10 to a total of 343.

Of the 15 counties in the U P, Alger is remains locked in at #13. I certainly hope we can stay there for a while longer.

Just got this in email from my insurance company

You’ve probably heard about the delta variant. It’s a strain of the virus that causes COVID-19. Delta is alarming because it has a 1,000 times greater infection rate than the COVID-19 virus had at the beginning of the pandemic. A year ago, on average, every 1 person who got COVID-19 spread it to 2 people. With the delta variant, on average every 1 person spreads it to 5 to 8 people.

In just the past few weeks, delta has become the dominant strain circulating in Oregon and Washington — and has caused a steep rise in new infections and hospitalizations. We have now reached numbers of hospitalized COVID-19 patients equal to the highest previous peak at the beginning of the year, and the current increase in hospitalizations isn’t expected to peak until early to mid-September. Right now, 85% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 are unvaccinated, and more than 90% of ICU patients are also unvaccinated. Hear more from the front-line physicians and nurses from a recent Portland-area press event.

We need your help
  • Get vaccinated: Getting the COVID-19 vaccine, at no cost, is the best way to protect yourself and others against delta. Even in the rare case that you do get infected, the vaccine will likely prevent you from becoming seriously ill. If you’re not yet vaccinated, or need to schedule your second dose, you can schedule now.
  • Wear a mask: Both Oregon and Washington have reinstated mask mandates for indoor spaces for all people ages 5 and above. Oregon will also require masks at outdoor public settings starting today. Masks continue to be required for all members, visitors, and staff in all facilities. If you don't have an approved mask type, we will provide you one during your visit.
  • If you are an unvaccinated adult, stay home and avoid community interactions as much as possible.
  • Avoid large group settings, wash your hands, stay 6 feet apart, and don’t share your air.

No helmets, no mask, what could go wrong?

South Dakota's Sturgis motorcycle rally: A 'cautionary tale' in the age of Covid-19

"Too much of a risk," Van Balen, 42, said of the rally, which was attended by 460,000 people in 2020 in what infectious disease experts likened to "a superspreading event." An even larger crowd from around the country is expected for this year's 10-day event -- starting Friday -- as concerns mount over the highly contagious Delta variant.

Are they saying that they won’t insure you unless you’re vaccinated Cheryl?

No that's not what they're saying. Mostly education about the seriousness of the Delta and that the hospitals are filling up. Also the clinics are back to being very strict.

I understand the vaccine is still free and they're trying to get more vaccinated.

The number of deaths in the USA and India together is nearly 3 times the population of Australia. 😢

Both have a bigger population than Australia, too.  So that is understandable.

A better comparison is to look at cases per million population or if you can find percent of population with coronavirus. That will give a better idea how well a country is battling the pandemic
