You may have tried to upload the video file instead of linking to it. That is the error message you get when you try to upload a file that is not supported.

If you get it when you try to post a  picture, it may be the file type. It accepts "jpg" and "gif" image files.

There was a fascinating article in our 'Whitehaven News' last week:

"A RARE film showing Whitehaven town centre in 1902 has been discovered.Michael Burdett (London TV series music composer) discovered the three-minute video of an “unknown town” on the British Film Industry website which came with an appeal to anyone who could identify it. Michael realised it was our town, Whitehaven, after researching some of the businesses depicted in the Market Place/Queen Street area.

The film shows the Mitchell and Kenyon company (of the late 1880's-First world War) shooting footage in the town centre with hundreds of people flocking towards the camera. It shows leaflets being handed out publicising a showing of the film later that evening (perhaps the one advertised on the side of the horse-drawn gig at the local Theatre Royal that used to be on Roper St).

Some of you from UK may remember that the vast collection of canisters of film footage Mitchell and Kenyon had stored in their early photographic studio was only discovered a few years ago and was the subject of a TV series on BBC2 a couple of years ago. It's great collection of social history showing everyday folk coming out of Mills, Factories, pits and ordinary homes across the UK  111 years ago.

This area of our town hasn't changed much as it has conservation status. The buildings in the Market-place date back to before 1611 (in the last shot) and belonged to the family that President George Washington's Grandmother married into. The short pylons/stobs/bollards were to differentiate the market-stalls belonging to the Earl of Lonsdale/Lord Lowther's Estates (he owned the town) from other market stalls. It's around here where we put up our literature stall and literature carts on Market days.
