I thought this article was very well written. About why some people choose not to vaccinate.

This article breaks my heart. I hope some who are eligible for the vaccine and still hesitant take in what doctors are saying right now. “96% of Alabamians who’ve died from COVID since April were not fully vaccinated” is such a scary thing to read. Most of these deaths could likely have been prevented if not for so much fear mongering about the vaccine.

I'll say one thing, don't read the 'soulslosttocovid' tag on Twitter if you're still vaccine hesitant.

That was ... sobering and panic inducing. 😐

I think everyone should read these stories. Even if it doesn’t make someone want to get vaccinated, hopefully it will make them remain cautious even while so many others aren’t. My heart hurts for everyone affected.

Some people in Missouri are getting vaccinated against Covid-19 in secret, doctor says. They fear backlash from loved ones who oppose the vaccines

The Covid-19 vaccine has become so polarizing that some people in Missouri are getting inoculated in secret for fear of backlash from their friends and family who oppose vaccination, a doctor told CNN Wednesday.

"They did their own research on it, and they talked to people and made the decisions themselves,

As coronavirus cases rise across the country, President Biden announced that all civilian federal employees must be vaccinated against the coronavirus or be forced to submit to regular testing, social distancing, mask requirements and restrictions on most travel.

The administration called on states, territories and local governments to pay $100 to Americans who remain unvaccinated against the coronavirus to get their shots.

Heard that the vaccine does alter DNA. Is that true?

so far only rumours... it´s technically possible in the presence of reverse transcriptase enzyme. But not proven.

Nevertheless, we will still be humans, not other species. :)

Besides.... for ages, DNA viruses have incorporated parts of their DNA in our own DNA.

The issue is ... SARS is a RNA virus, not DNA. So... not probable.

Vaccine effectiveness in preventing serious illness falls to 80% – Israeli study

Data released by the Health Ministry last week suggested that people vaccinated in January have just 16% protection against infection now, while in those vaccinated in April, the effectiveness was at 75%.

Also latest data from Public Health England

Are those in England offered the choice of another vaccine, other than AstraZeneca? Isn’t this already known this vaccine is not effective against the Delta variant? This study would suggest that.

According to the data, 220 of 224 vaccinated who died were those in the age group +50 verses only 4 cases in ages -50. Perhaps pre-existing medical conditions, a weakened immune system, in combination with a now known non-effective vaccine against the Delta variant resulted in death despite vaccination. I can imagine people relax after receiving the vaccine and go about life as if they are protected and no longer need to take precautions.

Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen are also available. I just skimmed the study, and I didn't see anything specifying which vaccine the patients took.

Don.t you take the vaccine for immunity?

The main goal of the COVID-19 vaccine is to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Considering that >95% of those dying in the USA right now are unvaccinated or partly vaccinated this means that the vaccine is effective.

The problem right now is that the virus has had time to continue to mutate, such that the vaccine isn’t as effective. The longer this goes on, the more the virus will mutate- who knows what that will mean for future vaccinations.

CDC document warns Delta variant appears to spread as easily as chickenpox and cause more severe infection

The Delta coronavirus variant surging across the United States appears to cause more severe illness and spread as easily as chickenpox, according to an internal document from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

[Evidence published between 21/07/2021 and 27/07/2021]

Yet more evidence that vaccines work

According to latest data from England, protection against symptomatic infection after two doses is 88% for Pfizer/BioNTech and 67% for AstraZeneca/Oxford. Despite an apparent drop in protecting against infections, vaccine effectiveness against severe COVID-19 remains very high (around 90%).

A cohort study in the US with 3975 health care and frontline workers detected SARS-CoV-2 infection in 204 participants (5%), of whom 5 were fully vaccinated, 11 partially vaccinated, and 156 were unvaccinated. Viral loads were 40% lower in vaccinated as compared to unvaccinated participants. In addition, the risk of febrile symptoms was 58% lower and the duration of illness was shorter.

A cluster of infections by the Gamma (P.1) variant among mine workers in French Guiana shows that half of the affected persons had been fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine. However, all breakthrough infections were asymptomatic or mild.

Vaccination prevented around 75% of hospitalizations in England's Delta wave, as determined by modelling by the FT. Without vaccines, hospitalizations would already be above the winter peak.

A longer interval between doses of the Pfizer vaccine (around 8 weeks) could work even better in terms of antibody production, while virus-specific T cells are maintained, according to a study in the UK.

High probability of infection?

The successive emergence of more transmissible viral variants means that the vast majority of the global population is expected to get infected by the virus, maybe more than once over their lifetime, according to several experts. In fact, the latest serosurvey in India suggests that up to two thirds of its population may have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, up from less than 25% in January.

Another potential treatment?

A screen of over 1000 clinically safe drugs identified the oral drug masitinib, an anticancer treatment, as a broad antiviral that inhibits the main proteases of coronaviruses, and that effectively reduced SARSCoV2 replication in mice.

Vaccine confidence

People in low and middle income countries are much more willing to take a COVID-19 vaccine (mean 80%) compared with the United States (mean 64.6%) and Russia (mean 30.4%), according to a survey. Thus, prioritizing vaccine distribution to the Global South should yield high returns in advancing global immunization coverage.

Another pandemic side effect

More than 1.5 million children around the world have lost a parent, grandparent, or other caregiver to COVID-19, according to a estimates. Countries with the highest deaths of primary caregiver per 1000 children are Peru (10·2 per 1000 children), South Africa (5·1), Mexico (3·5), Brazil (2·4), Colombia (2·3), Iran (1·7), the USA (1·5), Argentina (1·1), and Russia (1·0).
