I'm glad the brothers are waiting until August. Yet, what I'm seeing the numbers are going up in some areas. More time might be needed to be careful, even into next year.

I agree.  There is now something called "black fungus" in the USA in certain states, don't know where.

 

There is news that we might be in for another wave.  I hope these vaccines hold up against this wave.

FRAYER: They call it black fungus because it often discolors human tissue as it kills it. The scientific name for this infection is mucormycosis. It's from a fungus called mucor, which is ubiquitous in the soil in the tropics. And it's usually harmless, except when someone's immunity is very low, like Saran's was from COVID-19 on top of diabetes.

 

ARUNALOKE CHAKRABARTI: Somehow, uncontrolled diabetes makes a very fertile ground for the mucor to enter.

 

FRAYER: Dr. Arunaloke Chakrabarti is a microbiologist in the northern city of Chandigarh and one of India's top experts on mucormycosis. He used to diagnose about 50 cases a year, mostly in people weakened by organ transplants or chemotherapy. But he's diagnosed 55 cases this week alone, all of them diabetics with COVID. 

 

CHAKRABARTI: Around two-thirds of the patients have been inappropriately given steroid, or they have given extra dose of steroid.

 

FRAYER: Some doctors have overprescribed steroids for COVID, Chakrabarti says, and that may have made certain patients even more vulnerable to fungal infections. The mucor fungus grows in the respiratory tract and then spreads to the jaw, eyes and eventually the brain. Dr. Raghuraj Hegde is an eye surgeon in the southern city of Bengaluru who's been forced to make tough decisions for his mucormycosis patients.

 

RAGHURAJ HEGDE: Yeah, it has been very challenging. To save the patient, we had to remove many eyes over the last one month.

 

FRAYER: He's had to remove their eyes to save them. As if that's not bad enough, lately he's run out of antifungal drugs to help these patients recover. They typically need seven doses per day, and he's only able to give them one or two. The drugs are on backorder with the government. Some desperate patients are turning to the black market amid shortages nationwide.

 

HEGDE: So this has been very tough to explain to the patients. And they are frustrated, and we are frustrated as well. Because of the speed of this fungal infection, it gives us very little time.

 

FRAYER: In the best of times, mucormycosis has a 10 to 15% fatality rate. But in India right now, with COVID already collapsing the health system and shortages of antifungal medications, mucormycosis is killing about half of the people it infects.

Covid: WHO renames UK and other variants with Greek letters

I just heard on WHO that it would be a monumental mistake to think we are out of the woods.  In fact, they said this can go on for a couple of more years.

 

Unless the whole world is free of covid we are not out of the woods.  There are many countries that covid is ravaging the populations.  He said that people here in the US want to travel and so he said that even though we see "sprinkles, there is a storm looming ahead".

Interesting that the biggest spike of daily new daily cases was just this past April 2021 and the biggest spike of daily deaths was January 2021. 

 

If new daily cases stay about the same, India will surpass the US for total cases by the end of the month.

Not only deaths

A rough first estimate suggests that as much as 30% of the COVID-19 health burden could be due to COVID-induced disability, not death. Using the right indicators of disability and disease will help evaluate cost-effective strategies in different countries.

New variant names

The WHO announced a simpler naming system for SARS-CoV-2 variants. Each variant of concern or of interest will receive a name from the Greek alphabet. B.1.1.7, the variant first identified in Britain, will be known as Alpha and B.1.351, (first seen in South Africa), will be Beta. P.1, (first seen in Brazil) will be Gamma and B.1.671.2, the so-called Indian variant, is Delta.

Unequal viral loads

A German team analysed PCR samples of more than 25,000 cases with different symptom severities. They found that the youngest had a lower viral load than older subjects, and individuals who required hospitalization had higher viral loads over the entire time course. 8% of subjects had very high viral loads in the throat, and one third of them were pre-symptomatic, asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic.

Autoantibodies

A study finds that over 90% of critically ill COVID-19 patients had IgM antibodies reactive against 260 self-antigens expressed by different organs. These autoantibodies may be involved in the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19.

Indirect protection

Two studies (not yet peer reviewed) show that vaccinated individuals provide indirect protection to their household members. A study in Finland with vaccinated healthcare workers shows that mRNA-based vaccines not only prevented infections among vaccinated individuals but also (although to a lesser degree) among unvaccinated household members (43% of indirect protection by 10 weeks after the first dose). Another study in Scotland shows that household members of vaccinated HCWs had a lower risk of contracting COVID-19 compared to those of unvaccinated HCWs.

The force of T cells

An analysis of humoral (antibody) and cellular immune responses in healthcare workers vaccinated with mRNA vaccines shows that, despite a decrease in neutralizing capacity of antibodies against the B1.351 variant, no differences in CD4+ T-cell activation were observed. These results indicate that the mutations in B.1.1.7 and B.1.351 Spike do not evade T-cell-mediated immunity induced by vaccination with the original S protein.

Vaccinating teenagers?

A clinical trial with Pfizer’s mRNA vaccine in 12-to-15-year-old recipients showed a good safety profile and high efficacy against COVID-19. The study included 2,260 adolescents. 16 cases occurred in placebo group and none in vaccinated group. The vaccine has been cleared by EMA for its use in children ages 12-15.

Moderna will also seek authorization to EMA after announcing similar results.

Yes, but…

However, many health experts have been question ing the ethics- and the logic- of vaccinating teenagers in rich countries when vulnerable people in low- and middle-income countries have not been vaccinated. In this sense, Science identifies 4 actions to fight vaccine inequality, and how long this may take: i) donating doses through COVAX (weeks to months), ii) expanding production (months), iii) sharing knowledge (months to years), and iv) building plants worldwide (years).
