Silence in Castle To Honour Conscientious Objectors
stuagu and 3 others reacted to retroHelen for a topic
A MEMORIAL service is being held to remember 16 conscientious objectors “crucified” during the First World War after being locked up in a castle’s former dungeon. The Richmond 16 included Sunderland FC centre forward Norman Gaudie, from East Boldon, brothers Billy and Bert Law, from Darlington, Alf Matthews, a clerk at the Rowntrees factory, in York, and Alfred Myers, an ironstone miner from Carlin How, in east Cleveland. The conscription laws allowed men to object to military service on grounds such as faith or moral beliefs, but the Richmond 16, who were composed of Quakers, Methodists, Jehovah’s Witnesses and socialists, were ordered to join the 2nd Northern Non-Combatant Corps, stationed at the castle. When they refused to undertake non-combatant duties, they were imprisoned in the castle, where they left defiant graffiti on the cell walls, before Field Marshall Lord Kitchener ordered them to be sent to France, where they could be court-martialled and shot if they refused to fight. As they travelled towards France on a train, one of the group threw a letter out the window addressed to York MP and social reformer Arnold Rowntree, who alerted Herbert Asquith, the Prime Minister after receiving the note. After arriving in France, the Richmond 16 were forced to watch deserters being executed and given a punishment known as crucifixion, in which they were suspended from posts to which their hands and feet were tied, for several hours a day. Lord Kitchener’s sudden death at sea within days of their arrival in France, led Mr Asquith to commute their sentences to ten years’ hard labour. They spent three years in labour camps and civil prisons before being released in 1919.“When the surviving members of the Richmond 16 returned home they were ostracised by their communities as there was a great deal of misunderstanding about their witness.” http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/10507058.Silence_in_castle_to_honour_First_World_War_conscientious_objectors/ Among the Richmond Sixteen were five International Bible Students, as Jehovah’s Witnesses were then known. In mid-June 1916, the prisoners were marched before 3,000 troops in France to hear their sentence of death, but by this time Kitchener had died, and the British prime minister had intervened. A postcard with a coded message had got through to authorities in London, and the military order had been countermanded. General Haig was ordered to commute all death sentences to ten years’ penal servitude. Upon their return to Britain, some of the 16 were taken to a Scottish granite quarry to do “work of national importance” under appalling conditions, says an official report. Others, Brother Herbert Senior among them (quoted in the Awake article below), were sent back to civil, not military, prisons. See Also the Awake of February 22nd 2004 and the article on pages 12 and 13 "A Test of Faith" Bits of trivia -1916 Lord Kitchener, having condemned these prisoners, had taken a train to Thirsk and then a ship which got torpedoed and he died. I owned, but sold - his last letter written on that train before taking the fateful ship. He was writing to another gentleman's gardener to see if he could give him a better offer of a job at his house instead of his present employment. -The other postcard/letter mentioned in the article above, that was got out of the train by the prisoners, was for Arnold Rowntree - Quaker and social reformer and if the name seems familiar to any Brits - your right he was of the family of famous chocolate makers Rowntree and also related to the Cadbury's - Yum,yum!!4 points -

Other Religions are starting to recognize that God's Name is Jehovah
LoneWanderer and one other reacted to Allabord4Jah for a topic
A sister had this New KJB, so I borrowed it for a bible study. She saw it, we read a couple of scriptures from the TB, and they had Jehovah's name in it, except in the NT, but in the reference margin, it had the name Jehovah in it. But she just couldn't bring herself to say Jehovah's name. She said she didn't care for the New version of the KJB, that she liked her's better. She insisted that LORD is God's name. So eventually, a little bit down the road, her pastor got involved with her studying, and she stopped. The man of lawlessness jumped right on in there! I was not surprised! So I left it up to Jehovah to find another sheep like person, who doesn't get upset over his personal name - Jehovah!2 points -

Priceless to Jehovah
Miss Mouse reacted to Brenda for a topic
This came my way today and I thought it was encouraging. Forgive me if it's already been posted before. Just think about it, Jehovah could have chosen anyone he wanted to serve Him. But He reads HEARTS. Out of all the people on this planet, He chose you. Look at it this way. You walk into an antique shop. You are looking around and you see something you like. You turn it over and the price tag is $1,000. So you walk up to the till and you offer the shop owner $10. Imagine how he would react! Now think of us. Jehovah PAID a dear price for you with the blood of His Son's sacrifice. We are PRICELESS to Jehovah. You know that Jehovah would not pay the price if we were not worth it. Now, how do you think Jehovah feels if we place a much smaller price tag on ourselves? He would be insulted! You are a very special person, priceless, hand-picked out of all the world of mankind personally by Jehovah to know the truth and to serve the greatest person in the universe. And He did all of this while we were still imperfect and unworthy of this honor. You keep on hanging in there. Remember, Jehovah NEVER forgets his people and neither do we. When you feel buffeted by the world and of little value, think of yourself as a hundred dollar bill. Would you accept a gift of a crisp new note? Of course! What if the bill were not new, but slightly used? Still, just as good, right? What if you found the bill in the mud? Still, worth a hundred, right? But what if it's tattered and smudged and the corners are worn? Is it worth any less? Not at all! Whether bright and new or battered and beaten, a hundred is still ahundred. And we are precious to Jehovah and to our brothers, whether things are going fine or we have been through the mill. It's not the outer appearance or the current condition that determines worth, but what backs us up that gives us our value. Our currency is backed by the First Universal Bank of Jehovah. And you will remain just as valuable as ever, as long as you stay in circulation. So keep enduring, and one day we will all be in 'mint condition'. Agape, from your fellow tattered banknote1 point -

Wednesday, November 27 Work at good, . . . be liberal, ready to share.—1 Tim. 6:18. Paul was recommending that his fellow worshippers cultivate the spirit of generosity. Even in difficult economic times, we can promote a generous spirit. A fine way to do this is to provide transportation in the field ministry and to and from the meetings for those needing it. And what about those who benefit from such acts of loving-kindness? They would be encouraging a positive spirit in the congregation if they showed appreciation, perhaps by offering what they can to help defray the increasingly high cost of fuel. Moreover, would not our arranging to spend more time with our spiritual brothers and sisters make them feel needed and loved? When we abound in good deeds “toward those related to us in the faith” and are ready to share our time and resources with them, we not only deepen our love for them but also help to build a warm and positive spirit in the congregation.—Gal. 6:10. w12 2/15 3:61 point

Of course, it is a misleading reasoning from Satan. Concerning the fact that many translators have removed the divine name in the Scriptures, it was foretold by Jehovah himself : Jer 23:27 27 They are thinking of making my people forget my name by means of their dreams that they keep relating each one to the other, just as their fathers forgot my name by means of Ba′al. החשבים להשכיח אתעמי שמי בחלומתם אשר יספרו איש לרעהוכאשר שכחו אבותם אתשמי בבעל בבעל = בַּעַל n° Strong H1168 בַּעַל (ba.al): Baal MeaningBaal = "lord" from H1167 n° Strong H1167 בַּעַל (ba.al): master Meaning1) owner, husband, lord 1a) owner 1b) a husband 1c) citizens, inhabitants 1d) rulers, lords 1e) (noun of relationship used to characterise-ie, master of dreams) 1f) lord (used of foreign gods) Even in the Septuagint : των λογιζομενων του επιλαθεσθαι του νομου μου εν τοις ενυπνιοις αυτων α διηγουντο εκαστοςτω πλησιον αυτου καθαπερ επελαθοντο οι πατερες αυτων του ονοματος μου εν τη βααλ Βάαλ (baal): Baal, "master, owner, lord" MeaningBaal, (Hebrew for Master, owner, lord) So, interestingly, when the people pray God using just the "name" "Lord", instead of "Jehovah" they are doing what Jehovah foretold concerning the wicked ones, being misled by their dreams, their philosophy.1 point

Other Religions are starting to recognize that God's Name is Jehovah
sis little reacted to Rajan for a topic
Having gone through this, a thought comes to my mind. - Taking name of Jehovah does not mean that they started to give glory to the True God. Even in Bible we read people took name of Jehovah and indulged in false worship. So there can be some reverse effect. - We know many came to the Truth after hearing the name of God from the Bible. Now when we meet some people and wanted to show them from the Bible about the name of God, some of will start saying, "yes yes we know that the name of God is Jehovah. Now our religion is also teaching what you preach. So we think we need not study from you people....etc.etc... -Do you think it may be Satan's another cunning attack to turn away people as he gives advance information....?" -just a thought..1 point -

Hopefully the fangs don't come out for you, lol! I've got it on my computer here somewhere and should really get around to re-adding things to our new Files Library. - Bob1 point -
My mother and her whole family studied "Let God Be True", they were all baptized at the same time, in a pool underneath a Kingdom Hall platform, somewhere on the Westside of Cleveland, in 1956. It was my mom, her 2 sisters, her mom and dad and her Aunt! I think that is sooo cool! Also, there were only over 450,000 publishers, earthwide, at that time!1 point

I started studying in the "Live Forever" book in 1986 after my first child was born. Nanny as we all affectionately called her, studied with me while pregnant with second child and I got baptized in 1988 when pregnant with my third child. Nanny was the perfect sister to study with because to this day she is my children's grandmother and my mommy. And sadly all her kids left the truth so we are hers forever.1 point -

My Mom was baptized in her above ground pool in February! I attended a baptism of two brothers in a lake behind another brother's house. His last name was Pelliccio and I always called it Lake Pelleccio afterward! Mom began studying with me by means of the Truth book. She asked me to scratch her back. I responded that if she let me read her one chapter in my book I would gladly do that. I read the chapter How To Identify the True Religion. Half way through it was my turn to get my back scratched. When we were done, I just naturally asked her questions about what I read. Then I asked her, "Mom, how will you ever know if your religion is the right one unless you compare your beliefs with what the bible teaches?" She responded, "I won't! That is why I want YOU to study with me!" Just a month before I was crossing my yard, walking from her house to mine and said under my breath, "That woman is so lukewarm it makes me sick. Jehovah if she ever comes into the truth, it certainly won't be by me!!!!!!!!!!!!!" LOL WORDS TO EAT!1 point -

I was loaned the studied copy of Live Forever from the sis who eventually studied with me, she didn't have a placement copy. I read the whole book in one night and was convinced I finally found the truth. My relief to see simple answers to questions that other church leaders couldn't answer was profound. So after discussing the book with my teacher and proving I had absorbed it all, she knew I wouldn't happy trudging through it all over again so she gave me the Truth Book. I made good progress until- first was in a car wreck, month later my house caught on fire, when living in the motel my new car was wrecked, moved back in the newly fixed house and the washer and dryer blew simultaneously then my teacher had to move to San Diego. So I started going to meetings because I didn't have anyone to study with me and just plodded around trying to figure it all out by what I saw others doing. When my teacher came back we went over the remaining Truth Book to see if I could qualify for baptism. That was '85-'87. Wow so long ago.1 point -

Many years ago I saw a brother give a talk where he had a large piece of white poster board on a stand. On this board was a spot/dot/mark large enough for those in the back of the audience to see. It was slightly off center and not quite round. He asked what people saw - Many friends raised their hands and he called on quite a number of them. The first few said they saw a "dot" in the "middle" of the board. Then came the ones who pointed out that it was not in the middle ... and the ones who said it wasn't a "dot" since it wasn't round. There were several descriptions of the shape and the placement of the mark. When the audience started to give out and repeat answers already given the speaker finally said something like "Although it is true that the mark is off-center and not quite round, isn't it amazing that considering the size of the mark compared to the size of the board, no one saw all this white?" While it is true there may be some "typos" in the RNWT, I have not really noticed them because I am to busy noticing all the wonderful new wording to notice the few typos there may be. - In other words, I am looking at all that white instead of concentrating on the "dot".1 point

It is still something that is special, we loved our bibles before, but now we REALLY love them. So, typos and all, what a gift. As we tumble into the end of this system, Jehovah gave us a Bible that just crawled into our hearts. Could there be a more timely gift? I will answer my self.
