  1. From New Scientist Magazine May 26 2018 Hit red link to go to article.. PEOPLE in a minimally conscious state have been "woken" at home for the first time, using brain stimulation therapy delivered by their family. Some of those in the trial could respond to questions from their loved ones, having been unresponsive for years. "They were more present... laughing when someone was telling a joke or crying when they heard sad news," said one family member. "It was nice to see them laugh at funny scenes on the TV." People with severe brain trauma often fall into a coma. This can improve to a state of minimal consciousness, where they might show fluctuating signs of awareness but remain unable to communicate. In 2014, Steven Laureys at Liège University Hospital in Belgium and his colleagues discovered that people in a minimally conscious state could be temporarily roused using mild electrical stimulation. The people in his trial were able to respond to commands and answer questions for a few hours before drifting back into an uncommunicative state. Last year, Laureys and his team showed they could extend the period of awakening to a week by applying the stimulation over five consecutive days. Now, they have taken the therapy out of the lab and into the patient's own home by teaching their family members or carers to use the stimulation device. The study involved 27 people, one of whom had been in a minimally conscious state for 33 years (Brain Stimulation, doi.org/cp3j). Each received a 20-minute session of stimulation every weekday for four weeks, or a sham treatment. Eight weeks later, they received the other therapy. No one directly involved was aware of the treatment order. When the team tested the participants one to two days after the real treatment had finished, a fifth showed improvements in awareness that were not observed at the end of the placebo sessions. A few people regained the ability to answer questions, such as "Am I touching my nose?". To communicate, each patient was taught a code based on how responsive they were, including thumbs up or down, or even just blinking to signify yes or no. All those in the trial were in a chronic minimally conscious state, meaning they had shown no improvement for several years. "We'd expect even better results for people with more recent brain injuries," says co-author Géraldine Martens, also at Liège University Hospital. The study involved a technique called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), which uses a tiny amount of electricity to make neurons more or less likely to fire. The stimulation device is placed over the prefrontal cortex, a brain region involved in higher cognitive functions such as consciousness and decision-making. This area is also linked to neural "hubs" that help direct information around the brain. In conscious people, electrical activity spreads around the brain like a wave. Increasing the activity in the prefrontal cortex using tDCS is thought to partly recreate this wave of communication. The device was configured to apply 2 milliamps of stimulation. "We think that a longer protocol with higher current might have better or more long-lasting results," says Martens, "but these people can't communicate pain so we have to be really careful about possible side effects." The team acknowledges that it can be difficult for families to see improvements in such a trial, only for their relative to return to their previous state. In light of this, an ethics board allowed the families to keep the device after the trial. They have been told not to use it more than once a day, and never at weekends. "They've had it for about a month, so we'll be catching up with them soon to see what has happened," says Martens. "This is a great step forward," says Joseph Fins, chief of the medical ethics division at Weill Cornell Medicine, New York. But how therapeutically meaningful it is still has to be assessed, he says. Fins and his colleagues previously used deep brain stimulation to temporarily awaken a man who had been in a minimally conscious state for six years, after which he was able to form short sentences and interact with his family. After stimulation ends, the individual does gradually return to their pre-treatment state, says John Whyte, director of the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute in Pennsylvania. "However, there is reason to hope that the therapy could be continued indefinitely to maintain the improved performance." 3. The US first amendment is strictly limited to the government's role in stifling speech. If the NFL, a privately owned corporation, wants to restrict its employees from using their job as a platform for public statements, they are entirely within their rights to do so. Or put in Witness terms, someone working as a cashier has a legally protected right to participate in the field ministry while off the clock, but there would be no legal protection nor moral sympathy if that cashier was fired for handing out tracts while ringing up customers.

  10. Sunday, May 27 My son Solomon is young and inexperienced . . . Therefore, I will make preparation for him.—1 Chron. 22:5. David might have concluded that Solomon was not qualified to oversee such an important project as building a house for God. After all, the temple was to be “exceedingly magnificent,” and Solomon was at the time “young and inexperienced.” Yet, David knew that Jehovah would equip Solomon to handle the work given to him. So David focused on what he could do to assist, preparing materials in great quantity. Likewise, older brothers today should not be disheartened when it becomes necessary to hand their assignments over to younger men. Rather, it is in the best interests of the work when younger ones are trained to handle responsibilities. Appointed men should have great satisfaction when the younger ones whom they have trained become qualified to take on the work. w17.01 5:8, 9

  19. Not just trump, hillary pelosi shummer ryan mcConnell obama(s) Who is not spewing garbage? It's all pookie, and it's from every politician isn't it? His personality makes the skin crawl but in reality, the bottom line is he is no different than any other politician. He just sells himself as compared to the media selling the previous chump. No real difference in ego's that i can see. No one is capable of solving any real problem and they know it. (And we should know it more than them.) So they put on their faces and sell their snake oil and try to appear more righteous than the other guy. Tell me one thing that has gotten better in the last 20 years? And they (politicians, politics and media) will ALL get worse at what they do as this system crawls to it's demise. I still watch the news, not to hear the "facts", but to hear the REAL news we all wait for. Some day.......

  22. Brother, this is basically how it is. You said it. I understand the NFL is a for-profit business as well, and if kneeling is negatively impacting their ability to make money, or if it infuriates their customer base, they should definitely outlaw kneeling and make a rule that anyone who kneels will not work for them. As you say, its their right. But their solution only exacerbates the issue because those who stay in the lockerrooms will be viewed as "anti-American traitors". So staying in the lockerroom is NO DIFFERENT than kneeling. Their making the rule is also no different than the organization outlawing open dissent. We reserve the right to set the standards for active membership status.

"Trump’s desire to force patriotism with NFL kneeling ban echoes Nazi salute incident in 1933" http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/comparisons-drawn-nfl-protest-ban-nazi-germany-article-1.4010138 President Trump's condemnation of National Football League players who kneel during the national anthem bears a striking resemblance to the Third Reich's punishment of a defiant soccer club. "Stay Home, Nazis Tell Footballers" was the Jan. 6, 1934, Daily News headline on a story from Metz, France, after German soccer players declined to perform the infamous Hitler salute prior to a Christmas Day match. 27. It's interesting I've been wtaching vids of street stalls all over the world ... everyone has the same thing, just variations of the same thing. Japanese pancakes which everyone lines up for - is just a variation of a lemon cheese pudding we've had here for generations. BTW:Made Tom Japanese pancakes the other night - they are to die for. Crepes as French as the name suggests are in every street stall in Asia but done with different fillers. The Hot Dog - perfected in Germany my opinion says, but all over the world in differing variations. Pulled pork sandwiches or other meat, found everywhere but with diffrent cooking methods. Bacon and Egg variations, whether it be crepe form, pastry form or bread form. Honsetly there's nothing new under the sun ... just variations. The interesting thing about claims like Swedish Meatballs is often the name origin is very vague - like the Spanish Flu - one would have thought it originated or stayed around Spain because of the title - but no ... it was attributed to Spain because of the general Media blackout - where no-one was reporting the Flu except Spanish newspapers so because they were the first to report on it - it became theirs - so there's a warnng there folks, don't be too quick to claim things as yours it may backfire.

  34. David was not commissioned to build Jehovah’s temple but he had a generous spirit. He knew Jehovah would help him, so he did all he could to help prepare him. Just like David, our older brothers should not get discouraged, but they should train our brothers because it’s not about a position or title. The most important thing is Jehovah’s work.

Works just like it used to - only thing that changes is the bubble looks a little different.

  36. If the finger pointing could be narrowed to where the fault really lies - it would not be the NFL Owners nor the players .... not even the ones who "protest" by kneeling. If the MEDIA would not make such a big deal of it - constantly talking about it and showing close-ups of every player who kneels the matter would die a natural death. Either the players who kneel would get tired of kneeling or the fans would not really notice or care. But Every time a player kneels the media makes a big deal of it. They show the player(s) close-up while the anthem is being played instead of showing either the flag or the person singing the anthem like they use to. During the halftime break, instead of just talking about the game, the commentators have to, again, bring attention to the player(s) who kneeled The next day and through the week the talking heads on the sports TV and Radio talk shows bring up the kneeling and, often, spend more time talking about the kneeling players than they do about the game and it's outcome And, if anyone comments that the media are the catalyst for all the fuss - what do they say ..... 43. Looking at it strictly from a objective view - this is probably the second best solution the NFL could have seteled on. Most of the fans are there to see a sports competition - not a "protest" or "statement" made by individual players. Looking at it from an objective perspective, just suppose that some of the players decided to make a statement about other things - how would it look if, in addition to those players that are kneeling, what if some came out with only their underwear on while others came out wearing a and yet others came out waving automatic assault rifles while others came out holding signs with a red circle with a slash through it 🚫over the letters NRA and all the players who came from other countries came out waving the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 from their country of origin ..... Ludacris, you say - but, if they are going to allow the kneeling, they would almost have to allow all/any types of protests/statements. However, since they are employers, they can just say we do not allow any protest/statements. Now, the actual best solution would have been to simply eliminate the anthem from the game. If the players just ran out onto the field and the game started there would be no issue about this. However, this would not go over well with many of the fans so, even though this would be the best solution - it would never be implemented.

  46. How often that is true. It's not until a person stares persecution and threats right in the face that he draws close to Jehovah so deeply to seek refuge. For that reason he may feel it's the first time he has ever really been a Christian. That being said: I am probably not a Christian... yet. I feel for you in your surroundings, Victoria. But your comment has made me wonder about my own precarious situation, hoping I will react the same way as you when I am faced with circumstances like that. You have no idea how much your example inspires me. Thank you.

  50. If you are looking at the material (the daily text for example) and "right-click" on the page, does the menu choice "print" show about halfway down the list? If it does and you "left-click" on it, does it give a choice of printers available in the box? One should show but you might use the down arrow to see if another printer source might be selected. If that fails, can you highlight the material and 'right-click" and copy. Then paste the choice into Word and print from there? Just thinking out loud.....
