The Mysterious Coronavirus Spreading Worldwide

Recommended Posts

Samira, hoping all goes well for them both ❤️  It’s very worrying when your children are sick, as both mine were. This isn’t just easy for anyone. Covid is not just a mild disease, but for most people they do recover quickly, and hoping your family turn the corner soon. 😘😘. Big hugs my sister.

BBC article 11 March 2022

"More than 18 million people - three times higher than official records suggest - have probably died because of Covid, say researchers.

Their report comes two years to the day from when the World Health Organization first declared the pandemic.

The Covid-19 excess mortality team at the US's Washington University studied 191 countries and territories for what they call the true global death figure.

Some deaths were from the virus, while others were linked to the infection...

To calculate this, the researchers gathered data through searches of various government websites, the World Mortality Database, the Human Mortality Database, and the European Statistical Office.

Rates of excess deaths are estimated to have varied dramatically by country and region, but the overall global rate calculated in the study is 120 deaths per 100,000 people.

That would mean about 18.2 million deaths have happened because of Covid in the two years between the start of 2020 and the end of 2021 - three times as many as the official 5.9 million that have actually been recorded.

Excess death estimates were calculated..."

I've never believed the official figures because with JW's being 0.1% of the human race our death toll should be at most 0.1% of the global death toll. So even the 18 mill figure feels low.

Just saying because I have anti vac and covid denier associates: I've lost three people (Witnesses) during the pandemic to liver failure, suicide and cancer. None were classified as Covid, so when the Organisation says 26+ thousand deaths from Covid I believe it.

So my youngest had covid at the end of January and tonight he has been tested and come down with it again. Ridiculous.
Guess self caught immunity is a hope rather than a reality… for some.

Or, maybe he never completely got over it, like what they call ‘long covid’?

One small crack doesn't mean you are broken; it means that you were put to the test and didn't fall apart..

No. He has been completely fine. Was negative all this time until tonight.

Edit. Just heard others in the congregation have been diagnosed with covid now as well. It’s increasing in the area.

Covid has taken a back seat in the world's eyes since the Russia/Ukraine war, but it hasn't gone away and is, in fact, getting worse again in lots of places.  I can imagine this is only going to increase with travel back on the agenda and lots of movement around the world.

Misinformation that Omicron is ‘the last COVID-19 variant’ fuelling uptick worldwide

After several weeks of declines, reported cases of COVID-19 are once again increasing globally, especially in parts of Asia”, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus told journalists in Geneva.

In the past week, the agency has seen an 8 per cent increase in detection of COVID-19 cases, with more than 11 million positive test results.

“These increases are occurring despite reductions in testing in some countries, which means the cases we are seeing are just the tip of the iceberg”, Tedros explained, warning that when cases tick up, so do deaths.

He added that continued local outbreaks and surges are to be expected, particularly in areas where measures to prevent transmission have been lifted .......

“We still have Omicron which is transmitting at a very intense level around the world. We have sub-lineages of Omicron BA.1 and BA.2. BA.2 is more transmissible, and this is the most transmissible variant we have seen of the SARS-COV2 virus to date”

Another factor influencing the increase of numbers is the lifting of public health and social measures.

“Lifting of the use of masks, lifting of physical distancing, lifting of restrictions limiting people’s movement, this provides the virus an opportunity to spread.

........ there are ‘huge amounts of misinformation’ causing a lot of confusion among people.

WHO’s Executive Director of the Health Emergencies Programme clarified that the virus has not ‘settled down’ into a purely seasonal or predictable pattern yet.

The expert added that the virus is still ‘very fit’ and it’s moving around easily and in the context of waning immunity and vaccines not acting perfectly against infection, the virus will likely continue to echo around the world.

In view of all this, it is certainly interesting that the slave has opened up Kingdom Halls again across the world.

Patiently watching and waiting.

In Western Australia we are experiencing our first wave, apart from the original Wuhan strain. We expect cases to climb rapidly as we are in exponential growth. So case figures are scary - today at  7,151 - but hospital numbers are not surging. Not like the South African experience and Uk experience where hospital cases (though milder) went up as well.

The difference is that WA has a very high rate of third booster shots, over 70%, and still has mask and social distancing requirements. It also did not open the borders until the booster rate for third doses was above around 65%. Second doses are at 95%.  So, it’s a combination of factors that are helping keep hospitalisation and serious illness and death in check. So far…

It's interesting to read why restrictions in the US are being lifted despite corona virus numbers rising.

High levels of vaccination, low levels of hospitalization

In Rhode Island, where indoor mask mandates and proof of vaccination protocols will be lifted Friday, infection rates declined about 94% since January. "We're the second most vaccinated state in the country. Right now, we're the third most boosted state in the country," Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on Thursday, seeming to put more emphasis on vaccination rates than community transmission.

Bolstered by dropping infection rates and studies suggesting that COVID-19 caused by the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is less severe14, politicians in places where that variant is dominant are relaxing rules that were introduced to tackle the pandemic.

But others think that high rates of immunity from recovery and vaccination in some places mean that many of the interventions designed to stymie the spread of COVID-19 are now moot. “We’re in a different place now,” says Müge Çevik, who researches infectious diseases and medical virology at the University of St Andrews, UK. “It’s clear now we can’t prevent infections, so the focus needs to be on preventing severe outcomes.” She is optimistic that people won’t start “going crazy” as soon as the rules on masks and socializing are relaxed — instead, there will be a gradual shift back to normality.

Joël Mossong, an infectious-disease epidemiologist at Luxembourg’s Health Directorate, supports lifting restrictions in his country. “We’ve seen some deaths, but nothing of the sort that we witnessed last winter, even last spring,” he says. “The argument for keeping up the restrictions has really gone, and I think we were we’re now in a phase where the strategy to remove restrictions is the right way to go.”

This is from Finland's government website:

Hybrid strategy to manage the COVID-19 epidemic

The objective of the hybrid strategy in 2022 is to

  • stabilise society and keep it as open as possible,
  • support post-crisis management and reconstruction, and
  • prepare for the ongoing global pandemic.

Measures to fight the COVID-19 epidemic will primarily focus on encouraging people to protect their own health, offering vaccines to prevent the serious consequences of infections, and imposing necessary and limited restrictions. More emphasis will be placed on vaccination coverage, home testing and regional communication.

Quote

According to the testing and tracing strategy, persons should be tested for COVID-19 by a healthcare provider if

  • they have severe symptoms,
  • they are at higher risk of severe illness and have symptoms,
  • they are pregnant, or
  • they are healthcare and social welfare workers.

To manage the epidemic, it is essential that people who have been infected or exposed take measures to prevent the spread of infection. Anyone with symptoms, even if very mild, should avoid close contact for as long as symptoms last, even if they have been vaccinated or recovered from COVID-19. Those infected with coronavirus must continue to self-isolate and follow the national and regional guidelines.

Since the announcement to resume in-person meetings, we have more cases of covid in our congregation than we ever had in these last two years.  Infection rates are on the increase again in the UK.   It takes real trust and faith in Jehovah that things will be alright when we resume.

Yes I can attest to the fact that our congregation has a lot of cases lately. And quite a few friends in other congs too. Now my son has caught it. I blame the schools. But without the ability/motivation/desire to homeschool there is not much that can be done unfortunately. At least the spread will stop with us. We won’t be going out until we’ve all had two negative Covid tests 24 hours apart. Tesco deliveries and takeaways it is!

Completely unvaccinated, never got covid.

Several times came into contact with people who had covid, never tested positive.

Always tested, and especially when I was down with 2 horrible colds in the year, still was negative all the way through.

Always worn masks and socially distanced best I can within reason, but for 2 years haven't caught any variant of COVID-19 despite all the precautions (except for the unvaccinated part for some it wouldn't be a wise precaution) I've taken.

So I'm forever perplexed, dumfounded, but in full sympathy of anyone who has died at this time. Not an easy time to live.

As one sister in our congregation said, we need to learn to live with the virus like the flu. That time will come.
