  2. It is so nice to be noticed abd appreciated. We can tend to feel we blend into the crowd and nothing we do amounts to anything. Our self esteem suffers. I’m going to try and make it a habit to give praise, encouragement, or a kind word everyday to at least three people I come in contact with. Since the majority of people I see are at the hospital, who needs more encouragement than these? I will also include ones that are extremely difficult to get along with. I think I will pull out a neglected journal and start tracking my progress and how my feelings change. Good reminder. Ill start now. Thank you Vernalee for your tireless effort in your contribution to this site. And to Astrid for always posting the WT weekly. And really to all my brothers and sisters who contribute and support us all her with their prayers, research, support and watchful eye over keeping this site a safe place to land. Thank you and much love to you all.

  5. Yay! It's time for my favourite fruit season ... we have two HUGE feijoa trees that are just starting to drop fruit. I'll have enough to feed the congregation! If you don't know what a Feijoa is let me take you on this culinary journey. A Feijoa is a native of South America ... and grows Very well in New Zealand. It is also known in some parts of the world as the Pineapple Guava. So if you have ever eaten a guava then you'd probably understand the texture. The fruit are oval green fruit - looking a little like green Tamarilloes ...vary from very small = mouthful size to quite large pear size. I eat the skin, but many don't. The skin is sour sometimes a little bitter which I think compliments the fruit inside. The outer flesh is pear like in texture and a little sour but in the middle looks like mashed banana and is very sweet and perfumed - if you have ever eaten a lychee you will understand what I mean by perfumed. Some say it's an acquired taste - but I think most like them than don't. New Zealand makes a lovely Feijoa Wine, they can also be made into jams and preserves. Used in cakes and crumbles. Feijoa freshly squeezed juice is quite a demand. Health benefits: The feijoa fruit is rich in a number of minerals and vitamins. A cup ofFeijoa fruit contains adequate calories, calcium, copper, natural fats, iron, protein, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, zinc and Vitamin C. Therefore, this fruit is high on nutritivecontent. Also know to boost brain and memory function and helps your immunity against colds and flu. Below are some pictures of feijoa - and below are feijoa sweets/lollies we buy here - they are quite sour.

  6. I second what Leslie said. I really appreciate the positive comments and expressions we find on this site. It’s like an oasis of spiritual refreshment in a parched world of depression and anxiety that keeps getting worse by the day. Thanks to all of you.

  14. Copy from google searching... What is the difference between Gorilla and Orang-utan? • Orang-utan lives in Southeast Asian islands while gorillas live in African mainland. • Orang-utan is the largest arboreal primate whereas gorilla is the largest among all the primates. • Gorilla is black in coloration, whereas Orang-utan is reddish brown. • Orang-utan is mostly towards arboreal species, while gorilla is mostly towards terrestrial. • Gorilla has prominent forehead, but Orang-utan has a prominent face. • Both have long arms, but Orang-utan has longer arms compared to the legs than in gorilla. • Lifespan is considerably longer in gorillas than in Orang-utans In my opinion, orang utan is cuter than gorilla... Kong is gorilla and he is not cute...

  16. Fortunately, the topic here at JWTalk was already clear and accurate and didn't have a spin on it. The Snopes article repeats with more explanation what the FOX article and interview already clearly stated. The schools response/excuse was that they were not supposed to leave any student unattended - which is true. But Jacob's point was that it clearly divided the students into 2 camps, and would give the appearance that he sided with the gun supporters and/or would be disrespecting the lives of the 17 students who died in the recent school shooting. He didn't like that he had no other options given, and didn't want to be associated with either side. Convening with the pro gun group would give the anti gun group the false appearance that he was pro gun. He wanted it to be clear to everyone that he was not taking sides. Personally, I think the kids deserves extra credit for taking a stand for his beliefs.

  17. I should add that NSW also suffered a very destructive bushfire over the weekend too. A bushfire in Tathra, near the southern coast town of Bega was badly affected - 69 homes at least lost. No one so far has died from either state, thank goodness. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-19/nsw-bushfire-eases-at-tathra-firefighters-count-homes-lost/9561734 (the worst cyclone to hit Darwin in 30 years also happened - that's for another thread - http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-19/tropical-cyclone-marcus-clean-up-continues/9561930). Been a bad weekend.

  19. I don't have any off hand in the wild but I took these Tufted Puffin's this past Wednesday at a Sea Life Aviary not far from home. The Puffin is an interesting bird in that it digs caves for its nest at the top of offshore islands or sea stacks. One of the mates guards the nest and its young while the other goes for food. They are quite vulnerable to eagles and hawks. There are quite a number of different sea birds in my Oregon Coast video but it is rather boring. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMVEq4G9LOk

  24. Monday, March 19 Keep on encouraging one another.—Heb. 3:13. Jehovah and Jesus greatly value what all of us do to support Kingdom interests, even if our efforts and contributions are limited because of our circumstances. (Luke 21:1-4; 2 Cor. 8:12) For instance, some of our dear elderly ones make great effort to attend and share in meetings and the ministry regularly. Should we not commend and encourage them? Yes, seize opportunities to encourage others. If we see something that merits commendation, why hold back? Consider what happened when Paul and Barnabas were at Antioch in Pisidia. The presiding officers of the synagogue there told them: “Men, brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, tell it.” Paul responded by giving a fine talk. (Acts 13:13-16, 42-44) If we can offer a word of encouragement, why not speak up? We will very likely find that if we make it a habit to be encouraging, people will encourage us in return.—Luke 6:38. w16.11 1:3, 15, 16

  28. They are small but appear to be very strong! The second photo exposes legs a little bit more... Besides the beak, the second most important structural design would be its feet. Kookaburras may spend lots of hours on the branch of a tree, waiting for their prey as it is not always there for them, and so they need very strong feet to allow them to stand that long. Due to the fact that their legs are quite skinny and therefore not very strong, they have their toes stuck together to strengthen their feet so that they can hold on tight.

  34. An Ohio high school student said he tried to stay apolitical during the National Walkout Day over gun violence but was suspended for his choice to remain in a classroom instead of joining protests or the alternative, going to study hall. Jacob Shoemaker, a senior at Hilliard Davidson High School, said he didn’t want to take sides in the gun-control debate consuming the country. If he went outside for the walkout, he said, he would be supporting gun control. If he stayed in the common area of the school, he said, he would be seen as supporting gun violence and disrespecting the 17 lives lost in the Parkland, Fla. High school shooting the month before. This left Jacob wondering if it was a memorial for the lives lost or a show of support for gun control. He decided, instead, to stay in class for about 20 minutes doing homework after his teacher and fellow classmates left and locked the door. The district says it's responsible for students' safety and they can't be unsupervised. The school, as well as the Shoemakers, have received death threats and hate messages. Ohio student suspended Makes me wonder if he was one of JWs. The article doesn’t say, how many people would go through all that to stay neutral?

  40. That was a very interesting article, and a good explanation of what happens to our DNA throughout our lives. I know the article only touches on telomeres to explain the process, but I found this part interesting: Normally, telomeres shrink with age, the idea being that each time a chromosome is copied during cell division, the process chips away at that cap. Shortened or frayed telomeres are largely thought to be responsible for age-related cellular breakdown. But Kelly’s telomeres elongated in space … and then quickly shrank to their original lengths after he returned to Earth. That these structures exhibit such flexibility is intriguing and potentially quite consequential, says Bailey, whose lab studied Kelly’s telomeres. Just shows the complexity and marvel of our bodies, how Jehovah has created us. Whatever the consequences of the flexibility of our telomeres have on extending our lives, we will one day have the privilege of finding out when Jehovah explain it all to us. Unlike potential pseudo news, like Thesauron mentioned, sending us all into outer space to live longer.

  41. Plastic has become not my friend. I’m trying to avoid single use stuff, and we recycle. Please don’t get me started on plastic straws. If it comes from the ocean, and you are eating it, plastic is in your food chain. And, of course you don’t have to worry about the sea life killed by, yes, plastic. This poor earth. Jehovah’s beautiful creation has no respect by the majority of humans. Soon to be remedied.

  45. The article said: "The volunteers, ranging from 22 to 80 years of age, live and work at the Ukraine branch office of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which is located near the forest." I remember there being a park that we regularly maintained while we were in Brooklyn as well. There is nothing prohibiting groups of brothers and sisters in local congregations from following this example. I even think there is a local Metro Park nature area that has an area maintained by the local congregation. Clearly, the article on our website is their to draw attention to our community efforts.

  48. Anzhelika adds: “To me, the important thing is, not who left the garbage behind, but what I can do to remove it.” Lois, who is 78 years old, also joined the campaign. She says: “Instead of getting upset about the garbage when you go for a walk, it is better to pick it up and get rid of it.” What a great attitude. Getting mad doesn't contribute anything, but helping to clean it up certainly does. Imagine the scale of the clean-up we'll be doing during the 1000 year reign!

  50. You can get the JWPub link for any publication fairly easily. 1: Right-click (or on a mobile device, tap and hold) the page icon, and select "Open in New Tab". 2. In the address bar of the new page, you'll see a list of file formats like this: "fileformat=EPUB%2CMOBI%2CPDF%2CRTF%2CTXT%2CBRL%2CBES&alllangs=0" Highlight that entire group of bolded text (starting after the equals and ending before the ampersand), and replace it with the word ALL, so that it looks like this: "fileformat=ALL&alllangs=0" 3. Go to that new URL, and the page should refresh to a version that includes a tab for JWPUB, which you can now download and open the same as any other file.
